I have noticed in pictures that finishers at these events do not seem to be using anysort of fuel belts. Do racers simply go with whatever the race provides for the run portion?

At the 1/2s I've done, and the full that I watched, many/most people had them. But not all people have the flask kind. For instance, I have one that I can tuck my gel packs into. But by the end of the race, I'm empty. So it just looks like your average race belt.

It's really hard to be relegated to just what the race provides. You can train so that is what you are used to, but most of the times, races serve the big names like PowerGel and Clif Shots, and many people I know find them difficult to take.

In any case, that's been my experience! (o:

I think most experienced IMers use what's on the course - in IMs, I haven't ever carried a fuel belt or bottle carrier. So - its personal preference.

I use a single bottle carrier (20 oz. cycling bottle) for everything from a 10-K road race on up to a full Ironman. It's also got a pouch to store your car key, or a few gel packs, and has a sleeve that will hold one of those plastic squeeze bottles that I pour Hammer Gel into (about 3-4 servings). I use it all the time, even on training runs if they go more than 5 miles.

Depending on the race, most aid stations are enough,  you can carry a couple of gel packs to use.  I've seen people at the 20 mile mark in marathons with 6 flask bouncing around their waist still full(?).  Not sure what they are saving it for......I get irritated carrying 4-5 gel packs in my running shorts...Necessary irritants though.

Hi,

I did my first half last year. Doing my second half in six weeks. I don't wear race belt during the run - though I did carry a small water bottle (but then I knew the organisers would have water and coke and bananas at 2.5 km intervals - which is plenty frequent enough).

My theory (for the half anyway) is that if you don't eat and drink right on the bike, there is probably nothing you can do to get you through the run. So I really ate up on the bike (my 300 cals/hr) and got my max of 800 ml fluid/hr. Then I took a gel at T2, and then only fluids (water and flat coke) during the run.

I hate running while carrying anything and also have found race belts really uncomfortable.... I don't intend to even carry a water bottle during the run on my coming half....

But personal choice. pays to experiment a little.

Sally
