Per the attached press release WTC has cancelled IM China 2 weeks before the race. Needless to say, very frustrating, especially when the long-distance triathlon race options in Asia are somewhat limited. Considering that I am all trained-up, welcome any suggestions regarding a suitable substitute race in the next couple of months.

That is bruatal. I have to say OP, you are taking this rather well. Especially since you are probably in the midst of your taper. I am very impressed.

Big DH -

I am trying to be very Zen-like and put this 'set-back' in context. It was very gracious of WTC to offer a refund; however this still does not cover airfare, hotel, visas, vacation schedules coordinated with collegues, yada, yada, yada. As everyone knows, it is tough to get all the stars to align for an Iron distance race.

The bottom line : IMC was poorly executed from the beginning. Time to start racing Quelle Challenge races.

That really sucks!

I thought of you when I read the news today they canceled the whole race.

Race fee is but a small part of race costs especially traveling to a different country.

I hope you can figure out an alternative race that can work.

I think France or Switzerland would be fantastic races!

( I have no idea if they fit into your schedule or are actually races in which you may be interested... but they sound awesome! )

This was my first thought... giving a refund for the race is probably only 15% of the money you've actually spent, let alone the logistics of your race/work schedule and all the training.

I am sorry for you, and you seem to be handling it well.

That does suck.  Sorry, I know what a PITA it must be with time off, travel arrangements, etc.

Like racing, we can only affect those things that we can control.  After I DNF'd my first IM my friend said that a lot of IM race day is an emotional release for all of that stress in training.  I think he's right.  Hope you find a suitable alternate

Again, it sucks.

You are free to not do WTC events in the future. I have my own gripes about them.

However, *I* do hear that much of what happened was well beyond the control of WTC and was related to China local politics. So maybe I wouldn't do another IM in China. Either way best of luck.

What Fred said... (ha I made a funny... sorry easily amused)

I totally feel for you and it does suck and I would be totally freaking PO'ed, but it was China!  Me, personally, I would've never even signed up for an event in China, but that's just me.  I'm sure that WTC had very little control over what happened, other than maybe not even trying to put an event on in China in the first place.

When you live in SE Asia like the OP and many of us do we are limited on our options.  We can only try to find a race that works with our time schedule and hope it doesn't get cancelled or shut down.  It's not like there are many different 140.6s to choose from that are in easy to get to locations out here.
