Looks like many of you decided to become triathletes to shed some pounds and get in shape.

For those of us with hyper-metabolisms ... I have a question.

What do you do to not lose weight? I'm 6'4", 180 and have always struggled to add good weight. Now that I'm training for a triathlon, I'm burning calories like there's no tomorrow and can't eat enough food. I don't want to lose the weight that I do have.

Any suggestions? Is a protein - calorie packed supplement the way to go? Just looking for some tips.

Easiest way to increase your calorie intake is to add more healthy fats to your diet...flax oil, olive oil, nuts, peanut butter, almond butter...fat has 9 calories per gram, pro/cho only have 4 calories per gram.  For someone like you that has a hard time keeping weight on you should make sure to have a late night snack (verging on a meal) just before bed.  Tuna sandwich or PB and banana sandwich on wheat bread with a glass of milk, or a nice big 50g protein shake with some carbs and flax oil.  Also, make sure you take in enough nutrition during training and especially immediately after for recovery. I'd stay away from weight gainer type supplements...they are typically extremely heavy on sugars...complex carbs are the way to go aside from post-training drinks/shakes.  You can also add 1-2 protein shakes during the day or even in the middle of the night.  When I was lifting heavy and trying to build lean mass I'd mix up a shake before bed and leave it in the fridge.  I usually get up at least once in the night to hit the bathroom and I'd down the shake before I went back to bed.  6-8 hours without any nutrition makes it hard for your body to repair damaged muscles efficiently.

Just wanted to say I hate you. Yeah there's probably stuff out there for people like you, but I've never had to research that problem!

I had that problem for a lot of years. I ate like a horse but was 145lbs at 6'2" and couldn't gain a pound. The advice above looks much more educated than anything I could give you. I saw a Doctor about it and that had me drink a couple of "ensure's" a day.

Funny thing....in my late 30's this problem went away!!

I too suffer from a hyper-fast metabolism. I found a big breakfast really helps and also a lot of nuts, and oils (I like Extra Virgin olive oil and it only has 1g of saturated fat). Also breads. I like fruit too but it never fills me up for more than five minutes.

I have a hyper slooooow metabolism. The good part is, I didn't get an unpleasant surprise when I hit my late 30's!

Great information everyone - thanks. I'm a big nighttime eater, so I'll probably continue that and expand it a little. The oils and nuts is something new that I'll definitely try and the protein shake in the middle of the night (during sleep) is a great idea too.

I'd like to take some of your extra pounds - wish it was that easy. I'm 30 yrs old now so I'm expecting my metabolism to slow down at some point soon.

In the meantime - it's PB sandwiches and shakes for me!

Hmmm. I think I hate you.

I have a midnight snack of peanut butter and shakes, too. Of course, IT'S A FANTASY! And sometimes Denzel Washington or Ewan McGregor are there, too...

Best of luck, with that weight gain thing. (I can't believe I just said those two things together!)

Same "problem" here, at 5'9" and 148lbs. TH3 reccomendations are very good, and I actually do all that in my own diet. I find that a good breakfast including prots, carbs and fat, two other full meals and several in betweens with nuts,  fruit (banana is one of my favorites) and a good intake of water/sports drinks to keep one really hydrated is key.

I also make sure that I eat a prot/carb rich meal or suplement immediately after the cooldown and stretches that follow a workout. That is the best moment to feed the body of all it sepnt and to start regeneration fast. I notice that whenever I reduce sleep time I loose weight.

I use diet suplements daily in form of shakes, at breakfast, after workouts and most days before sleep. Most of my fat intake comes from nuts, extra virgin olive oil, fish but very little from red meat. I eat cereals bars that include almond and dates or other varieties into them whenever I have a food craving outside the 3 main meals and the three other (mid morning, mid-afternoon and supper).

Oh, forgot to say, that if I stop working out, my weight will drop a lot in a matter of weeks even if my fat percentage increases. It is now at a steady 7% total body fat, but muscle can be replaced by fat and get as high as 15% if I stop working out.

Do what I do I'm 6'0 and weigh 145. I eat anywhere between 8,000-9,000 calories per day. And I just eat anything I want, and whenever I want.

holy schiza!!!!  that's amazing.  i would say you're lucky because i LOVE food, but the pressure to eat 8K calories would be just too much.  i'm already always hungry as it is.  in fact, i'm hungry right now!!

Enjoy it while it lasts!  I was like that in high school...diet, what diet...hey, you gonna eat the extra Big Mac, how about them fries?  Now at 30 (soon to be 31) I can't remember the last time I had a Big Mac...6 months maybe

It could be hyper metabolism or if it really concerns you have your thyroid checked. My daughter, 5"1", 97#, quit exercising ate whatever she wanted to and still lost weight. Found out she's hyper thyroid. I'd say lucky her but it comes with it's own set of problems. I have been hypo (slow) thyroid in the past but I'm normal now. I think you are probably just young and lucky. Weight 'til you get older!
