Subject: Zipp 404 Max vs 808

I'm 6'5 and weight 215 lbs and just recently purchased a Cannondale Slice 5. Next is the wheelset I'm looking for any and all opinions on the options I'm looking at.

Zipp 404 Max Clincher

Zipp 808 Max Clincher

Zipp 1080 (what's the real benefit of this wheel over the other two)

**These wheels will serve as both my training and race wheels**

I ride on flat trails (florida) and would race on much of the same.

Obviously the terrain you race/train in will have be a factor, so it your weight.

In general, I would say 404 will be the most versatile, combining low weight with aerodynamic properties without making them difficult to handle in cross winds.

The 808's are great wheels, but will be more sensitive to cross winds, plus obviously if you live in an area with lots of climbing, the extra weight will not be to your advantage.

1080's do have a small aerodynamic advantage compared to the 808's, but they also weigh quite a bit more. They're also not fun trying to handle in cross winds...

The perfect wheel package would be a pair of 404's with either a 808 or 1080 rear (or better yet, a disc)

Just a question, why are looking to use these wheels for both training and racing?

My logic with training and riding on the same set of wheels is, "train how you'll fight"! At least that's one of the mottos we often use in the military. I would love to have a set of dedicated training wheels, and switch over for actual racing. However, I can't stomach spending an extra $2,000 for the same exact wheels when there are other items I would like to purchase. The dealer has offered to buy back the stock wheels that come with the bike, so I had counted them out of the deal.

Keep the stock wheels for training as I doubt you'll get more than a hundred or 2 back.

I was in your position a year ago and I went with the set of 808s with no regrets.  Also later on, you can add a disc cover to the rear 808 if you want.

Handling-wise you'll be fine.  I weigh 150 and the 808s have never caused me any problems.  Yeah I notice it when a bus passes me but it's perfectly manageable.  You'll be even better off at your weight.  No reason to go with the 404s, in my opinion.

Keep the stock wheels.

Buy used race wheels.

Save several several hundred dollars.

Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ZIPP-404-Clydesdale-Carbon-Tubular-Wheelset-4-t... you're willing to ride an older model of Zipps, you can pick them up for a song. ESP. if you want teh clyde version or the non-dimpled ones.
