I'll throw this out there too - one weekend workout I've had athletes do is:
Saturday: 2 hour run / 2 hour bike - all easy.
Sunday: 2 hour bike / 2 hour run.

That's 8 hours of working out.
4 hours of running.
2 hours of running after 6 hours of working out in 2 days.
Etc.

This might be more of a benefit mentally, but I've used is successfully for a few athletes.

Here are my brief thoughts on Longest run.

My longest run in training for a stand-alone marathon in November was about 20 miles.  I hit a wall at mile 22 and slowed down a bunch, ran 4:19

My longest run in training for IMLP was about 15 miles.  I never hit the same type of wall I did in my stand-alone, ran 4:10.

My coach capped my long runs at 2.5 hours training for placid.  I ran 5-6x a week, with most of my runs done very easy pace.

This, to me at least, gives me confidence in the 2.5 hour cap in IM training for long run.

Fred Doucette - 2011-07-29 7:14 AM Of course no one thing works for everyone (caveat for Lisac)....

heheee thanks
I am just trying to give some of the slower runners a different perspective. It's really cool to read about the faster folks and what works for them but it is SO different for us BOP'ers and I would hate for a beginner to try and apply what works for a 3 or 4-hour IM runner to their 6 or 7-hour run.

To answer your earlier question, yes I do start incorporating a walk in my training runs, usually after the 2-hour mark.

Mike-

Is this more useful for IM newbs/MOP/BOPers?  How far out from IM might you do this workout?  I imagine the last hr running in that 2 day block could be tough if you don't pace well.

Partly to revive this thread, which I find helpful, and partly bc we wondered the same questions...

Gave this workout a go this past weekend. Wow. In a good way. Net result was somewhere between "I just got my butt handed to me" and confidence booster. For reference, target is IMFL, which is ~ 11 weeks away.

Not sure if it was the correct strategy, but I assumed it was supposed to be zone 2 all the way through and really tried to get the pacing and nutrition pieces right. Seems to have worked as I actually ran farther the second day than the first day (although I could actually feel the wheels start to come off the bus in the last 30 minutes).

This can benefit any level - and I would say 6 weeks out from IM is the closest I would recommend it.

Zone 2 - bingo! Now you just need to figure out how to fix the wheels coming off the bus in the final 30 minutes.

Thanks, Mike. I appreciate the feedback and your input.

And yes, keeping the wheels on the bus is going to be key! I'll definitely be working on that over the next few weeks/months!

Fred -

Out of curiosity... what does the rest of your run training look like? i.e., what kind of pace/effort are you running for shorter runs?
