I'm really worried I'm not prepared.  Bike I'm pretty comfortable on but these last 3 weeks we don't do ANY 3 hour rides and I'm worried I'll "forget" how to ride for 3 hours.  I have a very shaky nutritional plan (Cytomax on bike with Electrolit and Electrolit on run and GU and hope for calories) but haven't been able to put in much swimming due to rough seas.  I've also never run over 1.5 hours and expect the HIM to take me 2-2.5 to finish.  I've been practicing Gallowalking as I'm just not sure I can run the whole thing.  I figure it is way too late to DO anything now but any advice?

Emfor - 2011-05-20 8:19 PM Pace yourself and race your race.If you have leftover gas in the tank on the end of the run burn it there.

+1  My 1st HIM was last July & I could have paced MUCH better.  HIM is long day not a sprint. I got so fixated on riding a good bike leg I was gassed for the run.  Last mi I literally could not run 150yds at a time without cramping & dropping to a walk.

Trust me- you will NOT forget how to ride in 3 weeks. Just get in some spins at your anticipated event pace to keep the legs fresh.

For nutrition- stick to products you know you tolerate well.  Read about how much to consume per hour.  There is a limit to how much the gut can process during exercise.

You've prob read about importance of tapering for the event.  These next 2 weeks should be about keeping fitness you've gained in training & planning your event.  Big training sessions now will not improve your event fitness but may leave you tired/overtrained.

And everyone worries about their training.  Try to relax & enjoy the day!!!

Stay within yourself and don't try to hero any of the legs.

Keep your calories up. Like a multi-IM buddy of mine says, what you do will pay off or hurt you 45 minutes later. I'm still more of a cyclist than a triathlete, but I always make sure I keep the calories and electrolytes flowing or I'll bonk near the end of a hard ride. Of course, it's easier to keep the calories coming on the bike than on the run.

Looking at your logs, you will be fine fitness wise.  Just make sure you take in enough calories.  I knew how much I should have taken in during my first half and fell way short.  I paid for it on the run and afterwards.

I captured my nutrition failure here if you want to see what not to do.

thanks everyone for the advice.  I'll keep it in mind on the bike.

GOOD LUCK and HAVE A BLAST!!!

I agree. You're fine fitness-wise and remember ... if nothing else, you've been at this game a very, very long time and have a lot of experience to draw from.

Take it easy in the water and the first 1/2 or so of the bike (as in, easier than you think you should be going). Reassess at the halfway mark of the bike, and I'd say only speed up to where you think you should be for the second half of the bike, not any faster. As others said ... you can always lay it down on the run if you are still feeling unusually sprightly by then.

I think Gallowalking is an excellent idea. Again, if you hit the second half of the run and you're like, wow, I'm on FIRE, then walk less and run more.

TriAya - 2011-05-21 2:54 PM... if nothing else, you've been at this game a very, very long time and have a lot of experience to draw from.

If you're talking about the game of life, you're right, I'm an old (50yo) fart but I've only been training since 11/2010 and my first tri was 03/2011.  So, not so much experience with tris (though I was a fish as a kid).

Thanks so much to you and everyone else for their sage advice.  Here's hoping I remember it (ya know, senility and all...)  looks like their weather is like ours so don't need to worry as I'm okay with 35, 36.
