They actually give participants a coupon for a free tattoo of their logo?

That's one way to do it...

Looks fun, and cool, but as far as "toughness," I don't think I'd rank it up there with a HIM.  I've done 10 mile trail runs that look harder, and I came out dirtier than some of the people in the pictures.

Looks like it would be a lot of fun.

Don't underestimate how much energy it takes to get through the obstacles; i'm sure it really is a "tough mudder."  Probably tougher than an olympic length triathlon.

My son did Tough Mudder in VT in early May.

There was snow, water, and it was in the 60s. He got wet at about 30' in and was wet over and over throughout the race.

It was his first race ever and thought it wasn't as hard as it was proclaimed on the website.

Harder then HIM? Not sure just different.....much shorter time wise maybe half as much time.

I had been intrigued about doing it but after watching have no desire to do one.  My 22 year old son that it was a blast and wants to do it next year.

I did the Georgia event - they said it was around 11 miles, but my guess is it was closer to 13.  If I were racing it, I think it would be about as hard as a half marathon.  I had a blast.

Do you know what % finished that course?  Georgia had somewhere around 75% finish because of the heat.

Having done neither, I can't specifically answer.  But I'm weary of the Tough Mudder as a true athletic event, and see it as more of a weird physical challenge.

What put me off was learning that one of the "obstacles" at the PA race was to eat a hot chili. Seriously? That's more of a dumb college drinking dare than a "how tough are you" obstacle.

Another obstacle was mild electrical shock.  Seriously?

I think of an endurance sport as something you train up for, so you can be physically fit enough to complete the duration. Many of the "challenges" in Tough Mudder seem to be little more than attempting to see how much people are willing to abuse themselves (or allow themselves to be abused) in the name of "being tough."

A fat guy sitting on his couch can eat a hot pepper and get electrocuted. No training necessary.

I did the GA event.  I've done a few Olympic distance tri's, and I think it could be as difficult as that depending on your level of effort.  Like me, many people complete this as a team.  My team mates weren't at the same endurance level as I am, so I didn't push myself for the whole time like I would have in a tri.  If you're doing this for time it would definitely be much more difficult than running anywhere near the same distance in a road race.

The fire and electric shock are just there for the fun of it, but I do think that adds value.  Watching your friends get electrocuted is pretty freaking hilarious.

My wife did the Mt Snow, VT race and said it was a blast.  Her motivation for doing "races" is to do challenges that are different, require a team work atmosphere, and are fun. We did Reach The Beach - NH last Fall, and she just completed Reach The Beach - MA.  You cannot compare this type of event with a triathlon, two different animals.  People who have not done them should not knock them though, they are intended to see how tough people are mentally more than physically IMO and to have fun.
