Subject: To pee or not to pee ..... that is my question?
During marathons and half marathns I regularly see people stop on course to pee (beside buildings, up against a tree, in the bushes, etc...). What's the protocol for tri's other than to pee on yourself; as I hear is acceptable and common place? Is it a rule violation to stop and pee in a bush or whatever during the run, or is it just against the law?

Against the law and a violation of trhe rules. Dude, do you really think peeing in public would be acceptable anywhere?

Is it a rule violation to stop and pee in a bush or whatever during the run, or is it just against the law?

Generally, both.  Though enforcement in either case is somewhat spotty.  Use reasonable discretion if you choose to do so.

Or pee on yourself.  Odds are you won't be alone.

Its one thing to pee on yourself, with your shorts on, which is common, especially on longer tris, a whole nother thing to pull your pants down in public and pee.

If anything, stop at the nearest port-a-potty.

If near a house on the course and the owner is outside and they are a race fan, ask them if they'll let you use their bathroom if you can't make it to the nearest port-a-potty (or maybe they'll let you sneak to the back and whizz (not Whizzzzzz ).

Else, have a filled water bottle available to squirt yourself while walking along tinkling in your tri-shorts (I've done this during a HIM).

Personally, I always use the porta-potties. There have been enough of them at every race I've done so far and the time it takes isn't worth the bother of not using them for me. Maybe that would change if I was in contention for serious cash but that's not likely.

Edit: Wait ... I just remembered. Once during an IM I stopped at an aid station and the portables were all busy. A volunteer suggested that I could pee behind his truck and that one time I did. Guilty!

I've been a runner for years, and I've peed in many places.  I'm surprised that so many on here were negative about it.  Since I am female, I don't do it during races because of the embarrassment factor, but I have gone many, many times along trails, in forests, next to roads, etc.  As someone who has given birth to 4 kids, if I have to go... I'm not gonna make it to the end.  I don't see why this would be any worse than dogs peeing on a walk.  I always try to make sure that no one is coming in either direction when I do.  If I was a guy, though, I'd certainly do it in a race if necessary.  Not a big deal at all.

I think generally it's "accepted" and I don't think I've ever seen a race where somebody wasn't peeing behind something.

However, I do want to caution about all the crazy laws that are out there now.  In many states it's more than just peeing in public, it can be considered indecent exposure or lewd conduct which are serious infractions that can result in your name/picture being placed on that fancy state run website. Surprised

So, I'd strongly recommend finding a portable restroom.

1.  Plan your hydration.  Drink up the day before, and that morning a couple hours prior to the race, but not much in the last hour or so.  Pee before the race starts.

2.  Depends on the location.  I run on rural roads.  Stopping to pee in the woods is no big deal.  Stopping to pee on the side of a building in downtown phoenix during the marathon with thousands of specators and runners- that's a tougher one.

I'd say that the answer to this question is very situation/location dependent.

First race I ever did was a 10k. I am hanging out by the start line and I see people rushing off to an area adjacent to the start. I think there must be some sort of give away or some good eats or something. All these people seem eager to get over there. So, I make my way over to what I discover is a vacant lot. Odd, I think, why are so many people coming over here. Then a woman scoots past me, goes to the nearest tree, squats down, pulls her shorts strategically off her butt, and pees. That's when i realize that all around me are people peeing. I've never questioned it since.

yes, a person could be cited for urinating in public.  That said, when I have to go I'll pull over and go to the side of the road.  I won't pee on myself...just can't do it.  I also won't pee in someone's yard as I wouldn't want someone doing that at my house.

"There are those who pee in their wetsuit and those who lie about it." For sprint to Oly distance, I don't have to go again after warming my wetsuit.

Those of you who have a problem with people peeing while on a run obviously don't have a swollen prostate.  When you hit 50, you will change your opinion!
