Subject: Valve Extender or 80mm tube

So I have an 80mm wheel coming in for my front race wheel.  The tubes I use have 50mm valves.  My rear wheel is a 30mm that I will use a wheel cover.

I am wondering what route I should go.  80mm valve tubes seems like the easiest way to go but my concern is whether or not the 80mm tubes will work with my wheel cover.  It doesn't seem like I have a lot of clearance between the presta valve and the cutout that will allow me to air the tire.

It would definitely be easier if I can just use the 80mm tube and not have to worry about the extender.

Any thoughts or suggestions about this?  Anyone with a similar setup?

I don't know if the 80 mm valve will work with your disc cover but I do know that you should try out that extender and carry one with you as part of your flat kit. One of my wheels needs a tube with an 80 mm valve. I recently cut back to carrying only one spare and ended up with multiple flats on a training ride. Fortunately, I had an extender so I was able to use someone else's spare tube. Most other folks will not usually have tubes with 80 mm valves; they are even hard to find at many LBSs. So even if you do choose to use the 80 mm valve tubes, for logistical reasons be ready to use the extender as well.

I have the exact same setup.  404 front, and 30mm rear with disc cover.

I use latex tubes, so 60mm for both wheels, with a valve extender for the front.  For my spare, I carry 60mm butyl, and use a valve extender if the front flats, none if the rear flats.

If you want, you can always use 80mm for everything...you just need to cut the hole bigger in your disc cover.

Alright thanks.  I plan to only use my 80mm and disc in races so I'm not really concerned about training rides.  My concern is changing out the valve extender in the event of a flat.  My valve extender has a tool to remove the valve core.  I'll have try see if I can remove the valve core without the tool.  The tool is small and would likely get lost easily.  With my luck, I'd get a flat in a race and wouldn't be able to find the tool.

Get the standard valves and get a couple Topeak valve extenders in various lengths. No core removal, no teflon tape, just screw it on and use it like a standard long valve.

The option to that is to get tubes and valve extenders without removable cores.  They just screw on pretty much hand tight.  No tools needed.  Prepping the spare tube with some plumbers tape just in case is a good idea though.

The latex tubes I use have removeable cores, so I do have to use a removeable core extender for it.  The butyl spare tubes require me to carry a separate extender as mentioned above because it's not removeable core.

Do you mean a standard schrader valve?

Or do you mean a standard presta valve with a normal exender?

presta valve without a removable core and an extender made for valves without removeable cores...like the topeak extender daniel mentioned above.
