I seem to recall that there was someone here that regularly swam in the welland rec. canal?  Is that person still around?  Do you know the water temp in Welland?

I'll be doing a practice swim in there on Saturday.  I'll let you know if someone else doesn't by then.

Measured it this evening near where the swim will be, at 3ft below surface it was 68F / 20C.

Sounds like a good temperature for swimming in a wetsuit!  Thanks for the update

Given the expected temps are going to be higher in the next week leading to the race, I believe the temps will come up probably in the area of 72-73.  I'll be posting some more updates every 3-4 days since I'll be doing more OWS in the canal in the next week.

Thanks for the updates Ray.  This will be my first open water swim this year.  Hopefully I don't have a panic attack like Lakeside last year.  I'm praying for wetsuit legal.

I grew up in Port Colborne, I wonder if you're the only member of the tri community there Laughing

From what I understand, they will not disallow wetsuits even if water temps go past 23-24C as their main concern is peoples safety.  In the last 10 years, only 1 race was disallowed wetsuits and it was a qualifier for the Age Group World Championships.

Not sure I'm the only one, I do see a lot of guys on TT bikes on the local hwys, but I don't see Port Colborne listed on any of the tri results around here, except for mine of course.

Found this on the MSC website:

Wetsuits will be allowed at all races where the water temperature is below 78F. For events where qualifying spots are being awarded the decision regards wetsuits will be made by the OAT Head Official at least 2hrs before the start of the event.

So it looks like it'll be fine. Laughing

I've been in the water twice this week. I didn't measure the temp, but 68 degrees sounds about right. It's cold and takes your breath away when you first get in, but felt good after a warm-up. A wetsuit is definitely advised!
Good luck to everyone racing and enjoy.
