10.  The run is not my favorite part.

9.  Snot rocket mastery is a must.

8.  Oranges are manna from heaven when on the run.

7.  Aero bars and aero helmets does not equal speed...it's the engine and how well it's trained.  White lightening and I (my cyclocross with slicks for the race) passed plenty of people that looked faster than little ol' me!  Time on my trainer paid off huge.  (of course there were plenty of people in aero gear that passed me too...no offense to you fast types of course)

6.  One is too exhausted to write up a witty and clever race report after the race.  Plan that for the next day.

5.  KISS applies to transition...Keep It Simple Studs/Studettes.  My transitions were terrific because I had the bare minimum of what I needed.

4.  Unless you are going for an outright win or age group win...there is no shame in taking some walk breaks on the run.

3.  Triathletes are awesome in general--couldn't think of a better group to hang out with for 7:04 today!

2.  The support crew (ie: wife/husband/whoever) has the harder job during the day...coordinating when and where to be, parking, dealing with all the other support crews out there and getting good pictures!

1.  70.3 is a hell of a lot of fun!!!!

First of all, congrats on the HIM finish!! It is a great feeling. I've only done one, and I'm hooked, too!! And with that single race, I learned something that I now consider to be sage wisdom. I shall now share it... for FREE.

#11 - When leaving T1, when the volunteers ask if you want sunscreen, say yes. After they get yoir shoulders and neck, ask them to get your lower back (if you're wearing a 2 piece tri suit). This will save you WEEKS of agony!!

Even though it looks silly and people will comment on it, tuck in your tri top or bike jersey. Tucking it in helps keep it from riding up even on the long, 5+ hour, training rides. Works in races too with tri tops and you can get it tucked in after you get going.

Congrats, fellow teacher, on your finish and great time! Figured if you survived all that training you'd kill the race.  I'm inspired. Now if my body will just cooperate (we've been having some disagreements about running, esp. speedwork, lately), I'm hoping to follow your example next year.  Love the part about the bike.  It must be great fun to pass someone with fancy equipment. (For me a very rare thrill.)

Awesome. Inspiring. I'm jealous you've completed 70.3

I'm just getting started and enjoying the sprint and oly before making the jump up.

You can do it...it was one year ago this very weekend that I even went and watched a triathlon.  I did one sprint in August--yup, my HIM was my second ever tri.  I just put my head down Jan 1 and trained my butt off!

Now THAT is inspiring.  My big goal for next year is an Oly.  I can't even imagine doing a 70.3 in the foreseeable future.

Congratulations!

You rock! I am so glad you enjoyed the race. Reading your early am training posts has kept me inspired many a time over the last few months. I have my first in 4 weeks. After reading this, I am already feeling calmer.

Kim, it has been a pleasure following your progress and the dedication you showed in preparing for this race.  I had no doubt that you would do great, congratulations.  And I always agree with #10 for any length race.

Wow...that is so true! On the bike I felt like like Queen of the Road and could do anything. Three miles into the run I didn't know if I could finish. Either way...wait a minute and the feelings will pass!

X2 on all the above.  I did my first HIM on Saturday and had the same feelings.  On the bike everything felt great.  Then the first few miles on the run were just pure torture.  I was sooo temped to walk but I knew if I did that it would be even harder to start running again.  I started to feel a lot better in the middle of the run and then again at the end the pain returned, my body was just spent.  Congrats on finishing your first too!
