Hello everyone! I was going through the Woodstock Post-Race Survey customer comments and sent an email to an athlete who had some thoughts on that race.

We traded a few emails and he suggested I join this forum and keep in touch with the Ontario athletes who frequent Beginner Triathlon. So, thanks for the invite and I want to let people know I will be around and posting. We have primarily been using Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/MultiSport-Canada-Triathlon-Series/352685666232 to keep in touch with athletes but welcome the chance to interact with all of you through this forum.

I have read some of the older threads and can see that there is a great group who have thoughts, opinions and, at times, would like information. I hope people won't mind if in the coming days and weeks I post to given you a little more insight into what we do and how we do it at MultiSport Canada.

Welcome! Would love to see that.

Lakeside was my first sprint triathlon last summer after the Bulldog try-a-tri. I loved the venue and Lakeside is on my race list again for this year!

Hi John - good to see you here.

My family and I have enjoyed 6 seasons of MSC triathlons and I'm happy to tell you that from my perspective the series keeps getting better and better.  See you at Binbrook.

Hi John,

Welcome to BT.   Joining this group is SO like you and your philosophy on running MultiSport Canada.   Always looking for ways to make it better for the participants.

Have been doing your series for 5+ years and really happy to see aqua/bikes added to the events.  Having had problems with running the last two years, tri's were/are out, but this allows myself and other injured or aging athletes to continue racing.

It would be nice to see them marketed a bit more.   I come across dozens of people who say "Gee, I didn't know they had option".    A/B's  have been around longer in the States, I think, and it is nice to have a large, competitive field, along with the awards.    Laughing

Looking forward to your posts!

This is going to be my first season in the world of tris! Really excited and the training has been going well. Bracebridge is going to be my first race which will hopefully be followed with Toronto Island! Can't wait!

Welcome to the site John.

Was wondering if you might be able to answer a question.

I'm under the impression part of the race fees are for "insurance".

Could you please give me an idea of what this covers?

Insurance or Race Day Fees is discussed on our website but is ultimately governed by the Ontario Association of Triathletes. The information is contained on this page: http://www.msctriathlon.com/ms/events/race_distances_categories.cfm

Here is a cut and paste:

Race Day Insurance Fees and OAT (Ontario Association of Triathletes)

MultiSport Canada is a proud member of OAT and all of our races are OAT sanctioned. If you are an OAT member there are no additional fees beyond what is posted on the website. If you are not an OAT member you will have to pay the one-day OAT fee on the day of the race. If you would like more information about OAT please visit their website by clicking on this linkwww.triathlonontario.com.

There is also a partial list of what race day fees cover at the bottom of this page: http://www.msctriathlon.com/ms/about/faq.cfm

I hope that helps answer your question.

My apologies John, but while I see "insurance" listed, I don't see what it actually covers on any of those locations you provided.

I'm wondering if the insurance is something that covers the athletes or the organizers/venue?

If it's the athletes I'm trying to get an idea of what's covered.

If you visit the OAT website and search insurance there are several references.

Here is one of them:

http://www.triathlonontario.com/hm/inside.php?sid=66&id=932

As I said in my earlier post the insurance fee is included in the race fees and is paid to OAT by the race organizer.  It covers the event for liability and also has insurance benefits for the athlete. Without liability coverage the various communities would not allow the event to take place. Does that help?

Interesting link. I didn't know that we had access to "sport accident insurance." I tried digging around the OAT site, but I can't find what that would include. It would be worth contacting OAT for any info on what that would cover.

When I was racing cars we had to pay a similar insurance fee. It wouldn't cover anything like our cars or even our bodies if we got injured. But if someone involved with the event got hurt or killed and someone had to sue then it was there. Hopefully it never needs to be used, but things can (and have) happened.

If there were no liability insurance I'm pretty sure events like this would never happen. Personally I would never take on the responsibility of being a race director (or even volunteer) if there was a chance that I could lose everything because of it.

From the link all the information I can find is, "Sport accident insurance – to supplement the member’s existing coverage – does not cover equipment"

Not exactly overflowing with information.

I've contacted the OAT and will post anything I get of value by way of a response.

As it is my money that is paying for this I'm disappointed it's proving so difficult to get any valuable information about it.

Like most insurance, it'll probably be good until you actually need to use it.

Sorry, I'm kind of cynical when it comes to insurance and what it represents.

The response from the OAT was, "The one day fees provide general liability insurance for you on the day of the race."

I asked what that meant/covered but no reply thus far.
