Expert 764 | Subject: Worst run race you've done There's a thread going in the Florida forum about a recent race that had some shoddy race directing. The race (in its 2nd year) ran out of water, poorly marked a bike turnaround, messed up the awards, little oversight of the transition area, etc. So...what's the worst run race you've ever participated in? |

Expert 764 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done Yikes! Yeah, the curb would definitely cause some wrecks! The tri I was referring to was part of a series and the first race had a bike dismount over gravel. At least one guy wiped out. |

Veteran 329 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done Small sprint started 30 minutes late, in the rain, 56 degrees. Then it took them three weeks to announce results......but without times. Only listed the rankings. I didn't bother with the water at the "aid station", but it was at the halfway point of the run, and it was full bottles of water with the lids still on and no trash cans. I have no idea if anyone even accepted a bottle of water from the sweet old lady manning this "aid station" |

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done Agree with BikerGrrrl. That single experience with that particular race company made me swear I'd never do one of their races, even if they did change their name this year. I vote with my entry fees, and they won't get any support from me. There are many many good races around here that I can throw money at. |

Regular 135 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done worst race every was an overnight relay i did. ive done a bunch of these but this one was poorly managed. tons of runners running on the wrong side of busy streets, having to cross the rd to get to the exchange area to hand off, 1 runner was hit and badly injured, and the next day 24 hrs later, we get to the finish, and the "beer tent" was just a place where you could bring your own beer and drink it... not BUY it. what a bummer ... then in the food line we were only allowed to take 1 hamburger or 1 hot dog, not more. NO beer and not enough food for runners whove been living out of car for 24hrs? come on now. |

Regular 82 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done CapTex this year was one of the worst ever. The complete screw-up on the swim for the pro field. A large percentage of the athletes who had registered and to re-register at packet pickup since their info had been lost. Tons of people put into the wrong catagory or wave. This played into the timing debacle where they gave up and canceled awards since they had no clue what anybody's time was or who had won anything. To top it all off judging from their posts on their FB page post race they seemed to think they had produced a completely successful event. |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done The worst-run race that I've been involved with was one that I volunteered at a couple of years ago. It was put on by a local for-profit promotor who scrimped on about everything he could and didn't put out the effort to get enough volunteers. It was a 'self-timed' race, i.e., he didn't want to spend the money for a timing system and the water station (only one) was 'self-service'. I think there were something like three volunteers. I had signed up because I was coming off an injury and couldn't run at the time. I got there early to help bodymark and then RD assigned me to the swim exit on the beach. He stopped by a few minutes later and told me that as soon as the last swimmer was out, he wanted me to run the 1/4 mile back to the transition area and help there and then run over to the finish line to help out there. I was tempted to just get in my car and go home, but stuck it out to the end. The clincher was that I never got any type of thanks from the guy. I thought the guy might have been going through a learning curve as an RD, but subsequent races he has promoted have consistently been overhyped and then disappoint. I'll never do another one of his races and advise others to do the same. Mark |

Member 473 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done a thanksgiving day 5K that has been going on for more years than ive lived actually missed a turn and forced most everybody to run an extra mile. another race that was just a bad performance was a 15K race and after the big hill 3 miles in it felt like i pulled a hammy and the last 10K were painful as hell! |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done The race I did last weekend—Long Island Gold Coast Triathlon, was pretty bad. There were lots of little things wrong with the race, for example: inconvenient packet pickup schedule with no option for a race-day pickup, and the race had no mile markers on the bike or run, so it was impossible to know where you were on the course unless you knew your pace. Also, at a time when most races are looking to be more environmentally conscious, it was amazing to me to see that the aid stations were pouring water from plastic bottles into plastic cups. But there were a few things that I consider pretty egregious: No sports drink on the race course at all. I can’t remember when I’ve ever seen that before. Can’t RD’s get sports drink sponsors to contribute for free in return for advertising? There were only two aid stations on the run, and both were so understaffed, you had to stop and wait in line to get half-full cups of water which were being handed out one at a time by one volunteer. There was zero security in the transition area. People were entering and leaving the transition from gaps all around the fenceline and no one was checking numbers going in or coming out, before or after the race. I could have walked away with the brand new P3 right by the exit and gone right to my car and no one would have noticed or said anything. The bike course was two loops of a 4.75-mile course, and, between the triathletes, duathletes, and aquabikers, there must have been close to 1000 people on the course at once. I was in one of the later waves, and by the time I got out on the bike, the course was packed with people on beach cruisers, folding bikes, and even recumbent bikes, which I thought weren’t legal in USAT races. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done My first tri, an off-road one in Vietnam (anyone who did it would know). I was 11th overall, second woman, and received no award. But they gave awards for the top 5 guys plus first masters. (I'm a woman over 40.) My friend DNF'd in the Oly (I did the sprint), course officials never noticed, she told the director she cut off a loop of the bike course and they should DQ her, and they still gave her the first place award. Another woman, who actually did the whole course, got nothing. Everyone I know won something in the post-race drawing, except me. Boo, hiss! I know it's all about participation, but somehow..... I felt a little gipped! Second place goes to an "adventure run" put on by the same company. 15 km (there was also a 30 km) in triple-digit heat, only one water stop, route marking so bad everyone got lost, no separate prizes for women (again), promised picnic lunch was a garbage bag of sandwiches that gave several of us food poisoning. |

Member 72 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done Wrost race I've participated in: was the Hell Run...I did the Super Hell course, they never put a map up for it. There were NO volunteers on the course in case someone got hurt (it was an obstacle course with a technical trail run) The obstacles were half assed or missing in some areas. Only one water station..where they were more interested in throwing water in your face then handing you a cup to drink. And the course was marked wrong, it was short. And to top it off we had to pay to park.
Wrost Race I've run: Nike Human race. They started it in Austin at 5or 6 when it was still like 95 and searing hot! I got pulled 3 miles in for heat exhaustion and had to have 2 IV's.
Worst Race I've volunteered at: Cap Tex Tri this year. It was run so poorly..I could write a very long critique but bascially it was horrible. They lost half the registrations: ppl had to re-register and they got re-registered wrong in soe cases. The packets were not complete (no arm bands, no swim caps, wrong swim cap, no wrist bands to enter transition, broken timing chips, or no timing chip or multiple timing chips, no way to check the timing chips, no info tent. no real volunteer info. timing was way screwed up, awards were almost 2 hours late, the awards were missing or checks not signed, or the wrong award amount because the bike shop providing the g/c got tired of loading them and cut checks, but didnt seperate the amounts. they were missing place medals, we never found them while i was there. we had to call the awards ceremony (ppl were not nice, cant blame them but i was just a volunteer, got called multiple names in several languages. Ill never race this event, this is the 3rd year in a row they have had major complications and they do nothing to fix it. Only good part of that day was I got to put andy potts medal around his neck! |

Master 2327 North Alabama | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done My worst was in GA at one of the Calloway Garden Triathlon. It was billed as Olympic but was definitely short. Transition: There was no area for the relay participants, they just needed to be in the transition. Anybody could enter/exit transition as they wanted. There was no supervision over who was allowed. I feared my bike wouldn't make it through. Swim (measured 1100yard): Bike (measured 18.6mi): The volunteers were constantly shifting us from the right lane to the left lane on the roadway for no reason. Toward the end of the bike lane, the volunteers STOPPED all traffic around the transition, so then the bikers were flying by parked cars trying to get to transition. Run (measured 5mi): I will not do that race again. |

Veteran 329 | Subject: RE: Worst run race you've done Sounds like this years CapTex Tri race is the winner of the "Worst Race" award. My sister did this race and it is my understanding that in the race packet you got temporary tattoos for your body marking. apparently the temporary tattoo numbers my sister received didn't match her actual race number. Why do you guys think this race had so many problems? Too many participants? Not enough volunteers? Do they try to get too creative with technology? I don't live in Texas, but I just happen to know two people that did this race and both had issues that shouldn't happen. Crazy. |
