Have any special arrangement for it or do you just lay it down?  I'd like to rig something so I can pull the front wheel and anchor it standing up without worry.

I have a roof rack, but if and when my bike occasionally does get put in the back, the most important rule is derailer side up.

In the Tahoe there is enough room to lay it down......front tire off, chain ring up......

I just fold down the back seat and lay the bike down flat - with the chain side facing up!  I push the back wheel against the side of the vehicle and then position the downward facing pedal so that it keeps the bike from moving.  Easy as that.

Anyone ever anchored a roof rack mount into the floor?  Call me crazy but I'm seriously considering this.  Well, it would probably be screwed into the back of the seat so I could lay seat down, clamp in bike, drive off.

My bike fits, standing up with bungees, with both tires on in the back of my CRV.

4 kids + 1 large dog = Suburban SUV...bad on gas, good on bike storage.  Remove front wheel, set in place, plenty of clearance...don't even have to worry about the large chainring.

I take the front tires off and put the bike in upside down with the chainring facing the back.  Fits like a glove.

I don’t think you need to go as far as anchoring the bike, to.  I have a roof rack and a hitch mount, my car is used like a support vehicle so it is not unusual to drive around with 6 bikes in my car, but when I take only mine to the office to ride in the afternoons I just fold the back seat, lay it down with chain side up and that’s about it.  It doesn’t slide around and super easy to get it in and out.

You might want to get a cover to protect the back of the seat in case some grease rubs in, but besides that no special preparation.  I do all this in a Jeep Grand Cherokee that is not the biggest of SUVs

In my mini-van, I can put my 61 cm Cervelo in with no issues (I may take the front wheel off if hauling a passenger), but when using my car I have to take off both wheels and put the frame in and then the wheels into the trunk (carefully).

x2 on the Suburban.  Complete bike goes in (with 3rd seat removed).  No need for anchoring. Simple as that.

I have an 05 pathfinder and this is the solution I came up with to transport 2 bikes:

The rear passenger seats fold down and you can easily fit two bikes and all your gear.

Bike Rack

I lay mine down in the back of my Blazer with the seats folded down.  I use one of these to keep the grease off the carpet:

YES.

Get a 2x6 cut to the width of the inside of your SUV. Buy a Yakima bedhead. Since it's inside you won't need the locking bedhead. Affix the bedhead to the 2x6.

Take the wheel off, roll the bike in, lock the fork to the bedhead. Done. Bike is standing up, and the board (if cut to the full width of the SUV) won't flip the bike.

If you're worried about the bike tilting throw your gym bag ontop of the board. I've had no problems with mine though.

This.  We just screwed generic fork mounts to a 2x4 cut to the width of the truck bed (under a cap, in our case).  We planned to bolt it to the bed floor, but never got around to it. It's nice to be able to easily remove the 2x4 when not in use and this means less damage to the inside of your car, too.

In ny Honda Element with I carry my bike inside using one of these.

http://www.saris.com/bike-racks/vehicle-racks/specialty-racks.html?...

With the rear seats removed, I can hold up to Three bikes, usually only I only carry one or two

the bike rack can be easily put in or taken out if the rear is needed for something else. I also have a front wheel holder that mounts on the tripple trap.

You can also buy a 2X6 board and mount the front fork holders, that is not as easy to adjust as this.

I bought my RAV4 in large part because of the ease in which my bike fits. Drop down the "40" part of the 60-40 split rear seat and back it in. Doesn't budge while driving. No need to remove the front wheel or anything for that matter. I put a towel on the seat to protect it, drive train up and away from the seat.

For two bikes, I have two fork mounts mounted on a 1x6, and both seats are down.

If one bike I just lay it down.

If two bikes I use a tie strap and stand them vertically against the side with the strap securing them to the roof-mounted handle meant to aid egress. This leaves the vast majority of the back available for other stuff.

If one bike and no more than one passenger, I just lay in down in the back of my Acura MDX with the back seat folded down, derailleur side up and the down-pedal facing forward.  If multiple bikes I have a hitch-mounted Saris rack that can hold up to 4 bikes.
