Subject: Should I buy a Aero Helmet now?
I have the opportunity to get the Giro Advantage 2 for $60.I'm still riding a steal road bike (cant afford a new bike atm). I feel like I would look ridiculous with an aero helmet and avg 17mph on a road bike? Should I go head and pull the trig now and save the helmet for later? My current helmet is a giro atmos.

If you can maintain a good, quiet body position at 17 M.P.H. the helmet may provide some benefit. Some, at that speed, but not a lot.

It woud provide much more as you approach, 19, 20 and 21 M.P.H.

would this be a large/xl helmet and where?

I would save the money for tubes/tires to replace while riding more to get the engine stronger.

Everybody looks ridiculous in an aero helmet.  Yes you will see benefits.  Get it.

$60 is a pretty good price.  At the worst, stash it until you are ready to be dorkafied like a lot of the rest of us!

First, I'm amazed at how short this post is Tom...some kind of record.  I would wager this was posted from a cell phone.

To add to Tom's advice...he is referring to short distance races.  If your goal is to reduce your overall time on the bike, you will see quite a benefit during longer races by buying the helmet.  And yes...everyone looks ridiculous with one on.  I wear mine around the house backwards.  Even that is worth the $60 IMO.

ETA:  I didn't realize we were talking road bike...your race photos will look LEGIT!!!

No sorry it's small and medium. And it's a LBS in Miami called Mac Cycle.

Yup.  Get it.

I'm not a strong cyclist and have only a road bike.

I picked up an aero helmet off ebay last year and did my best average speed ever (19.9mph).  I swear that helmet bought me a half mph.  Very non-scientific test, of course, but I was happy.

For 60 bucks, buy the damn thing.

When I bought my TT bike used, the guy gave me some clipless shoes free with it.

I had the option of getting some brand new ultegra pedals and cleats, and a LIGHTLY used Giro Advantage2 aero helmet for 80 or 100 bucks or something.  I don't take the helmet out much, but LOVE having the option at such a great price!

I end up buying it. There are 3 more and the salesman said you can buy them from their online store if anyone is interested. http://www.mackcycleandfitness.com/ga2010101.html

Tom has one of the bikes I mentioned in another thread, that actually talks in a robotic voice "APPROACHING AERO MAXIMIZATION SPEED"

lolz...
