Subject: Lake Tahoe, open swim dream?
Hi I am going to Tahoe in mid-July and I'm wondering what the open swim conditions are there. I'm thinking it probably rules. I have a wet suit so I'm prepared if it is cold...but I know there are a lot of boats. No one else in my party swims so I need to be able to swim from shore alone. I am staying in Crystal Bay...near Kings Beach. Any comments on where to swim? Hot tips?

Welcome to Tahoe.

The water as of today is 57 degrees. We had a harsh and late winter and the snow is just finishing up melting. I would say the temps will be in the low 60's by mid July and mid to high 60's by August.

The lake level is much higher than recent years due to sooo much snow. The reason for the lower temps this time of year. As far as where to swim, take your pick. All of south shore is beaches and you can swim to your hearts content.

Too bad you weren't here in the second week of August. There is a triathlon on the 14th. I'm definitely wearing a wetsuit.

Swimming solo in a big lake? Get one of these http://www.ishof.org/safety/testimonial.htm I have one it rocks.

It's cheap insurance and a piece of mind.

Good luck, I'd love to join you.

There's Donner Lake just a few miles up the road having a sprint and olympic on July 16... That's my next race. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the responses! Wow mid-60s.....burrr. My own local lake is about 71 in the summer and I am fine without a wetsuit so with the wet suit I'll probably be fine in Tahoe. I've never swam in water that cold however.

So at kings beach boats aren't a problem? Any hazards I should be aware of? Anyone know of any secrets gems for swimming on Tahoe? Donner seems nice too but since we are staying at tahoe I'll probably be swimming there.

I am stoked
