Subject: Distance run on recovery week
I have recently reached 5 mile runs in my training regimen, having run the distance twice in two separate bricks in preparation for my Sprint tri on the 10th of this month. The run portion of the tri is 5 miles on trails, hilly and uneven, which will be challenging; like I mentioned I've only covered the distance twice and that is on mostly roads and grass so I'm thinking another 5 mile run might be advantageous. I plan on doing some upper body/core exercises today, but the rest of the week I am unsure. I'd like to get a light swim in tomorrow, with a bike/run on Thursday or simply just a 5 mile run. I would think Friday/Saturday rest would be sufficient, but since I'm supposed to be 'recovering' I am unsure; what do you guys think, will it help to do 5 or should I just 'recover'?

You might be confusing "recovering" with tapering. If you're racing on the 10th, your lower-volume (but possibly higher-intensity ... you're not following a training plan, are you) week before the race is called taper.

A distance run at this point gives you no fitness whatsoever for the race and will probably just tire you out especially since you're not used to it.

Nevertheless, looks like since you have the experience, you'll be fine to finish the tri even if it's on a different surface. Have a blast and good luck
