Subject: The flip turn and chemical sensitivity combo thread

This past winter I learned to do flip turns. I am still "perfecting" my technique and occasionally water gets up the nose. I exhale through my nose while turning but sometimes the speed/timing get messed up and that's when water gets up there. In some pools it actually stings a bit. Over this same time I've been doing flips turns I will occasionally get sinus irritation which can lead to major sneezing fits, congestion, and a dose of Claratin. I've figure I have a few choices:

1. Put up with it - Yeah, this sucks. Very uncomfortable
2. Stop doing flip turns - I like them. They are fun and seem to help my swimming.
3. Wear a nose plug - Never used one, still would like to breathe out of my nose and not have to relearn how to breathe
4. Find a better way to use my breathing to keep water out of the sinuses while flipping - any suggestions??????

This. The trick is to learn how to create pressure in your sinuses without having to exhale a ton, that will make it last longer before you run out. You don't need to blow too hard (insert joke here) to keep the water out.

I second this.  I scrunch my nose and pucker my lip up while i'm flipping.  Even if I blow as hard as I can only a little bit of air comes out and when I finish my turn and rotation I still have plenty of air left to exhale normally and take my next breath.

I second the second. I've been doing flip turns since high school though, so i can't actually tell you what i do. it's second nature at this point. I'm pretty sure i do not exhale until I've pushed off the wall. So my guess is i just "close" off my sinus's with pressure like Bryancd mentioned.

Like the other posters, i just use a little puff out my nose as I am flipping over, not a big exhale.

Also, after my swim, when I get home, I use a neti pot to clean out the sinuses.

Now that I think of it a good way to practice would be to go inverted underwater & just stay there for a bit and you should experiment until you can hold that for a while without any water in the nose.  This way you can concentrate on your nose and airflow and not be worrying about flip turn technique at the same time.

I used to do handstands in the pool all the time as a kid and I can stay under for over a minute completely inverted on one breath.  So, I just use the same nose technique of a slight air trickle when doing my flip turns.
