I bring new meaning to Athena. Currently I'm 5'7 and 270 pounds. Yeah. BIG. I have been a lot smaller in the past (think 80 pounds lighter) but I'm trying to get back in shape. September 11 I'm doing the TriRock in San Diego. It will be my first Tri. The water is supposed to be around 68 degrees and wetsuits aren't required. Some people have told me I still might be cold.

What are your recommendations for getting a wetsuit?  I don't mind renting, but I'm afraid I won't find something big enough. Do you think a long-sleeve rashguard would work instead?

I plan to drop 10-20 pounds between now and then.

Thanks for the advice!

The longsleeved rash guard won't provide you with noticeably more warmth in my opinion.  I have a dive skin (essentially full body rash guard) that i wear (recreationally for snorkeling and stuff) and it's not any warmer, it's just for exposure.  So I wouldn't bother with that.

I would probably look at some men's suits...    You might want to buy because you may need to cut the length off the legs.  Another option would be something like the two piece DeSoto suits, if you're a hard to fit shape.

For 68 degrees I don't think you "need" a suit, although that depends on the distance.   I do a race each year in those temps and there are always a handful not wearing a suit.  That's an Oly distance race.

Good luck!

Hey we're almost the same size!  That makes us friends forever...!

However, I'm a guy 5'8"  270.  I got the Xterra full suit, the one with the orange logo.  They seem to always be on sale.  I got the XXL.  It was VERY snug when I first tried it on, after a few swims it is very comfortable and it seems to fit just right...

I don't think you need a wetsuirt.  I've done lots of races without a wetsuit in similar water temps.  I think you will likely be fine.  I
