Subject: roadbike around $500
Hello,

I have been reading the posts and most of the advice/suggestions/reviews are for bikes in and around $1000. I am new to the sport of triathlon, maybe 1 month old, and surely dont want to spend a lot on the first bike.

I have been looking online ..
like
http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/miragesport.htm
http://www.fujibikes.com/2005/bikes.asp?id=13

There might be similar bikes but I am yet to come across them.
The constraints :
Price : around $500
Shifters : not be thumb based (or the ones that are on the frame rather than on the handle).
Any suggestions ?

Can anyone comment on the bikes i have listed. In the specifications, there are lot of jargons, is there a link where i can read and understand what they really mean and hopefully compare between different brands. If you reply with the jargon defn, that wud be great too.

thanks.

-mic

Being that I ride a Fuji Ace I think I can comment.

Mine is a 2002 or 2003 I think...It's a great first bike but I've outgrown it within the first 1 1/2 years.  I am so ready for a real road bike now and I'm stuck with my $400 purchase because that's all I could and still can afford.  I've been able to upgrade the wheels which helped for decreasing the weight and increasing the speed.  When I bought my bike in 2004 the bike was already a year old and most places don't have parts for it anymore (but that could be a problem for any bike I imagine).

I've never riden anything else but the bike has never been a bad ride.  The original rims caused a lot of flats but you wouldn't have that problem with a 2005.

If I had to compare it to a car purchase I'd call it a low end Saturn.  Well made but once you've got it don't plan on getting rid of it.

Would I buy another...never, I'm beyond that point, but it was/is a great starter bike.

*EDIT*

Crap, I forgot to say that I hate Sora components!!!  For crying out loud, up grade -- for what it's worth!!!

I have a Fuji (League)...I like it alot, but it has it's limitations...if you know you will be doing tris for a few years go ahead and spend a bit more...I'm already looking a bikes around $1000 (bought the Fuji in April).

I really like the looks of the Felt F90, at my local shop running about $570. Really good mix of componants, ok brakes, and Carbon fork. You can check it out at www.feltracing.com

Good Luck,
Jay
