I love running / cycling too much to distract myself from it with music. It'd be a little like watching TV while making love.

I have tried it - listening to music, podcasts and audiobooks but I find I run a lot worse since I can't hear / focus on my breathing, heart beat, footsteps and sound of surroundings.

Originally posted by dfquigley I've never trained WITH music.

I get to be more aware of my surroundings, for safety purposes, as well as appreciate my surroundings in the wind more, pay slightly more attention to what I'm doing, listening to my breathing, etc.

I can't imagine doing a race WITH music!

^ Yep.

I NEVER run or bike without music (one bud in, one out, which ear depends on the activity, ear to traffic out), and I've done plenty of races up to 8 hours. Never had an issue during the race. People say you can't do it during the race why do it during training... because it's 1-17 hours vs. hundreds. But on race day there's adrenaline, sometimes a new route to look at, other competitors, spectators, managing the race... it has never bothered me during the race and I've never missed it.

Never run in training without, never race with. Never miss it on raceday either.

I can't tell, but are you wearing ear buds in your avatar picture?
