It's not so bad, My Ipod broke a couple of weeks ago now and I've been running without it. It's kinda nice without the music, it gives you time to think without any distraction. Plus you'll be in a race and can talk with others. You'll be fine.

You will be fine.  If you have done all this training with music you know it already.

And if you really want to psych out the competition you can just sing your favorite song as your run.

I find this tough because, for me, the best part of running is cranking my music.  When I race, I do my best to go through the songs in my playlist in my head.  Starting from the very beginning and silently singing the whole thing through.  That probably sounds ridiculous but it works pretty well.

Other than that get ready to hear your breathing and check your watch much more frequently.

Good luck, have fun and race hard!

I do the same thing and I sometimes I sing out loud.

Oh yeah? Try being deaf for 30+ years...

I never do any of my training with music. Just me and the voices in my head. :-)

It's really not that hard to train without music. If I can do it, anyone can.

I've never trained WITH music.

I get to be more aware of my surroundings, for safety purposes, as well as appreciate my surroundings in the wind more, pay slightly more attention to what I'm doing, listening to my breathing, etc.

I can't imagine doing a race WITH music!

I don't have any proof, but I believe it's possible for the legs to function independent of the ears.

Partially for this reason I do about half my training without music.  However, in races I rarely miss my music and even though I think music helps on long runs or easy relaxed runs during hard efforts (such as a race) usually music just ends up annoying me and I pull out the ear bud if I have it in (I only ever listen to one).  I'm guessing you'll have enough adrenaline going you'll be just fine.

Never run in training without, never race with. Never miss it on raceday either.

You might find you like running without music. Running is my time it is almost like mediation for me. The last thing I want is music cluttering up my thoughts.

We should commission the government to do a study on this.  can't be any worse than the study that found people who cannot afford cars are more likely to take public transit.

Found that I ended up going faster in my races without music than with.. stop using it as a crutch, let your mind relax and take in the surroundings.. durring a race there is so much more going on that you don't have to worry about focusing on music..

^^^ This.  You won't miss it.  I would miss it in training, but there is so much going on in a race to keep one's attention.

I doubt you will miss it on race day, as there is to  much going on around you with all the other athletes, spectators etc. things you do not normally have when you are training.

Have a good race

I know it's tough, but you can do this.

I started "running" last year and the only thing that got me through every agonizing, embarrassing, sweat- and pain-filled day was the music in my headphones. I scoffed at the thought of ever going without.

When I started looking into tris this year, I read that headphones weren't allowed. It sent a wave of panic through me, but I figured I'd deal with it when the time came.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago -- my trusty earbuds stopped working in the middle of a run and I haven't been able to afford replacing them.

And what do you know... I actually am running a LOT better now without music, and it hasn't even been difficult to adjust to. I just listen to my breathing and the sound of my feet hitting the ground and I'm taken to a whole new place. The second I start to think about other things or play mind games to entertain myself, my performance suffers. It makes me think that I was missing out on something all that time that I ran to music.

I hope you also find that this works even better for you. Good luck in the race tomorrow.

I always train with music, and even have done little local 5k's with my ipod.  However, my first run without music was a 1/2 marathon race, and I didn't miss it at all.  I only have a few options as far as routes to run when training so music helps keep boredom at bay.  I do find though that in races there is so much going on that music would take away from the experience.  Between the people cheering you on, and so many nice people to chat with along the way, you probably won't even miss it.

^^^^^^^This!

I don't even like it when they crank up the music in the start/finish or transition areas. Must we always have constant electronic audio stimulation in order to function? Part of what I really enjoy is getting away from all the seemingly constant noise when I'm out on a country road or a trail.

To each their own though.

I tried to run with music on a couple training runs. It annoyed me so badly I've never tried it again.

Guess I don't get it. I'd rather hear what's going on around me and come up with my own amusement.

I'll train with it most of the time, but never race with it.  There is more than enough going on to stay occupied.  Music would actually be a distraction.  Focus on catching the guy in front of you.  If that is not enough motivation then you have a new problem to center your attention on.

I actually find that I run slower with music. I use my IPOD on the the treadmill (and trainer) and that is it. I've even ditched it on track sessions as too.

Try it. You'll like it!

I trained for marathons with music designed to keep my pace up.  After I switched to tri's and found out that mp3 players weren't allowed, I started training/racing without.  I've pr'd more times than I can count since I stopped using music.
