Gilligan’ star Bob Denver dies at age 70
TV's favorite ‘little buddy’ had undergone bypass surgery this year

Updated: 2:54 p.m. ET Sept. 6, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show “Gilligan’s Island,” made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver’s death was first reported by “Entertainment Tonight.”

I feel awful. I watched Gilligan's Island so much as a kid I had all the episodes memorized. They played re-runs at 4pm everyday when I got home from school. I can even remember the name all the members of the Beatles rip off band that came to the island, The Misquitoes. Bingo, Bango, Bongo and Irving.

One of my favorite shows growing up. Like you, I always watched it after school.

Didn't he die in a plane crash a few years ago? Loved his song Rocky Mountain High.

I must be the old fart here...I remember Bob Denver before Gilligan's Island, when he played the part of Maynard G. Krebs in "Dobie Gillis."

BTW, John Denver's real name was John Deutschendorf...he took the last name "Denver" because he liked the state of Colorado. Guess he thought "John Steamboat Springs" wouldn't roll off the tongues of the record label executives.

Max, once again you have spared me. I, too, was remembering him from the Dobie Gillis show. Can you say 'beatnik". Play the bongo drum, grow a goatee, and be "cool man".
From a time when our world was black and white but our imaginations were splendidly colorful.

I have watched all the reruns of Dobie Gillis in my time too (a little young to have watched it when it was on) and I loved the Maynard G. Krebs character as well. I thought he was the epitome of cool. Come to think of it that look still holds today.

Holy crap.  I grew up on Gilligan's Island reruns in the 70's.  Its times like this that make me start to feel my age.   I think he was everyone's little buddy.

The only thing good about Gilligan Island was Ginger and Marianne.

I loved Gilligan's Island and I guess the world must have loved it too because it is still playing. An amazing thing about the series is how short it actually ran - only three years. An amazing impact for a show that was so short lived, innocent and light hearted.

It's a sad fact that Triathlons force us to lose our sense of humor. I am thinking about starting a study for cures for this sad malady.

When I was younger, I kind of thought Marianne was the cute one what with her big beautiful eyes.  Then I felt that Ginger was a little more to my liking with her big beautiful ... smile, yeah, that's it her smile!  Now, I think that I would go for Mrs Howell with her big beautiful pile of money!!!
