Noticed a slight "grinding" noise the other day while coasting, that pulsed with wheel rotation speed.  Sounded like a bearing.  Checked tire and brake clearance, both good.  Pulled wheel off.  Wheel spins BEAUTIFULLY on the axle, but when it is free-wheeling (clicking) by holding the cassette while spinning the wheel, the grinding returns.  No noise when pedaling.

Shimano-compatible 10-speed freehub.

Thanks for any thoughts.

What hub are you using?  If the grinding is there, you're probably going to need to replace it.  Most freehub bodies aren't terribly serviceable.  You might pull it and see if there's anything caught in the mechanism.

How old is the hub? Have you cleaned it recently (soap/water, solvent, ...)? Have you ridden the bike in a lot of rain? What I'm getting at is: Is it still lubricated inside?

If it is the hub, and if you have the right tools, you can take it off/apart to clean/lube it. It's more involved than a cassette, but not too difficult--I've rebuilt many of them.

Thing is 20 miles old.  Company is going to warranty it, no questions asked.  Changed their tune.
