Why I fell apart on the run. My upper back hurt and I basically ended up having to walk because I never felt like I could get enough air. My heart rate was about 110. There was nothing wrong aside from of course being tired. This has started happening as the weather has gotten hot this summer. Am I possibly asthmatic? An ideas on training adjustment are appreciated.

Humidity?  I find that when there's alot of moisture in the air it gets harder for me to breathe.  Just taking a guess.

Not a lot of info to go on but could be a nutrition/hydration issue (especially if you couldn't elevate HR).  Or could be a matter of too hard on the bike for your current fitness...or a combination of both of these..................

There is something called Exercise-induced asthma that is different from typical asthma (different cause), but has similar symptoms.  Might be worth seeing a doctor about it if it's a consistent problem and you find yourself having difficulty breathing like you described here on a regular basis.

That's so interesting that you say this....I did my first tri on Sunday and I completely STUNK at the swim (I'm not that great anyway...but usually not this bad).  I could not get enough air....my breathing sounding like I was blowing into a bottle....and my heart rate was not elevated at all.  It was about 96 degrees out and the humidity was off the charts.....I have "exercise induced asthma" and it really got me!!

It was really strange. I will see a doctor and try and find out if it could be asthma. If not I will simply run more I guess. I do hate it most.

Could it have been a cramp in your back? Or was it just soreness?  I did my first 70.3 a couple of weeks ago and caught a cramp in the middle of my back and couldn't catch my breathe.  My run was 16 minutes slower than I anticipated.

I'd be interested to know if you had a similar situation to me.

Those are exactly my symptoms with exercised induced asthma. Long workouts in humid weather are one major trigger. Typically about 2.5 hours into a run in the summer I will experience this. In my only HIM I had to walk/jog miles 4-13 because of those same symptoms.

I too had a horrible experience this weekend in a HIM on the run.  Coming off the bike my heart rate felt pretty low, but my breathing felt all wrong.  I figured I'd take an easy mile or two, but I cramped up big time, and walked jogged the rest of the way.

There maybe something to that exercise induced asthma.  Either way, a bad weekend for racing in the heat.

Just chiming in as another asthmatic who gets severe upper back pain during really hot runs when the ozone/pollution counts are bad. I feel like it's from fighting to get breath down into my lungs. I had a full blown attack the other day and it was not pretty. Be careful out there.

Thanks guys. I was in Racine and it was really humid. I will set a doctors appointment and figure this out.

CONGRATS!! on your HIM!!

the abnormally high pollen count this year is believed to be causing lots of non-asthma folks to develop EIA.  I now have to carry an inhaler just in case even though I've never had breathing problems until this season.
