Subject: Biting off more than I can chew?

I am a runner just getting into triathlons. Last weekend, I completed my first sprint triathlon without any training(except the running portion). Up until last weekend, I can honestly say that I haven't swam in about 3 years. I would like to compete in another triathlon ASAP. The next tri coming up in my area is on the 31st. However, the swim is 880yds and the bike is  15 miles vs. the 12 that I did this past weekend. I felt pretty good after the 400yd swim last weekend....finished in 8 minutes. Would I be biting off more than I can chew trying to swim 880yds without any training? I don't think I will have a chance to swim before the race. Any thoughts?

I don't know. People who have a swimming background can swim the distance with long periods of time without swimming. Others, need to train. There is also a sub group talented enough to just gut it out. It would be my belief that a 1/2mile swim will be really tough for an average person without any training. Although, an 8 minute 400 in open water with no swimming in 3 years suggests you are not a complete novice to swimming.

Can you get some swim practice in?  you have a week and a half still to practice the distance in the pool.

I think you would do fine, if you did 400 in 8 minutes. Just don't set your self up for disappointment with to quick of a goal. Have fun and enjoy your new obsession

I don't swim 400 yards that fast, and I did an Olympic two weeks ago.  The jump from a 12 mile ride to a 15 isn't significant.  I would do it, and just enjoy the experience.

Well.....I was able to get a little swim in yesterday evening! I decided to swim 880 yds just to see how I felt going that distance without stopping. Honestly, I felt a little lethargic and tired. I mean, I did run and bike earlier in the day....maybe I pushed it too hard and was a little fatigued by 7pm when I was able to swim. I think that I may try to swim on Tuesday or Wednesday and see how I feel going the 880yd distance or more. If I feel strong, then I will give it a TRI this weekend. If not, maybe I will wait for the next one in about 3 weeks. Hmmmm

Remember that you will have adrenaline, proper nutrition/rest/hydration (hopefully) and be will able to draft during the swim....so maybe that will help....

I don't think that you'll have any problems.  The best thing you can do is get enough sleep, hydrate, and eat to fuel your body.  Good luck!
