Subject: Calf needling / permanent damage?
Wondering if anyone else has had calf needling done with any success. The type of procedure I had was where the PT inserts very long needles into the calf muscles in various locations trying to find and release phantom muscle knots. It's very painful and the leg would jump off the table at times on it's own. I asked the pt if that was a nerve and he said that's what he wants to see happen. I never experienced any calf issues at all prior to this needling. He said it was necessary to relieve calf muscle tension in an attempt to help my plantar faciitis. Walking out of the office the muscles were sore and locking up, this continued for months, plus constant muscle twitching and spasms. It's now two years since the needling and my calves still twitch frequently, and ball up and get very tight locked up and cramped even from just waking. Could this be permanent nerve damage? Never had a single calf issue until I got on that PT table. Very frustrating.

Never heard of needling. Is it like acupuncture?

Someone else posted a while back about complications after needling. I believe she had a punctured lung that may have been from back needling. Google "dry needling" for more information. Sounds pretty awful, IMO.

I think you should probably have a doctor check that out.  Seems really strange.

Are PT's even licensed to do invasive procedures?

Some are, there are certifications for needling.  I had some very successful dry needling done on my pectineus muscle last year.  But, as with any procedure things can and do go wrong.
