“How old would you be if you didn’t know now old you were.”
I read a quote like this years ago and it really got me thinking. Kind of like “Are you hungry? Not sure what time is it?” Why do we put so much emphases on what we should feel and not what we are really feeling. I know I’m in better shape now then I was when I was 18. If I went toe to toe with my 18-year-old self I would kick my 18-year-old arse in every way. (Well he would have a little bit smaller crow’s feet.) But as a more elite form of athlete (triathlete) would we be very accurate to give someone a chronological date so they can make a predetermined judgement of how we should act... Should we even count the days, weeks and years? If we didn’t know how old we were would we still have a mid-life-crises? What about playing the age card? “Yeah but your younger then I am” If someone dose that to me I automatically add 15 years to there life… If its in your head you might as well slap it on your divers license as well..

Just looking for some different perspectives, from young and old. Or should I say experienced and more experienced..

Cheers.

Rice

LOVE that quote and try to use it as often as I can work it in. I know it as a Chinese proverb.

I am 29 but I forget that all the time. Not on purpose or because I think I'm old (or young) or anything, it's just...if someone asks me how old I am sometimes I have to calculate it out.

Course I've been like that way before I got into triathlon. But I could so outrun my 16-year-old self. And seriously outswim her. She might be a little more keen on bicycling than me...but I can afford a much nicer bike than the ones I borrowed at 16 so it might even things out.

perception and self confidence and the things you do. I make concious effort to smile majority of the day. Also, though I am large, I love myself and people know it.
I work with drug addicts and what I see consistantly are people who are 18-30 looking 60-70 it's incredible and unbelivable.
That number is truely just a number but society puts so many boundries on age it becomes the most important thing in our lives. For example, Driving Age, Drinking Age, Dating Age, Retirement Age, too old to date too young to date, age brackets and the list goes on.
So, when somebody asks me how old I am, I have them guess and say, "right on the dot! Wow good guess!!"

Sometimes I feel like I'm 50, but usually I feel about 30 when I'm actually 37. Like others, I think I'm in better shape now than when I was in my 20's. Never dreamed I'd be able to run over 6 miles without heaving.

I've always told people that kids age you faster than anything else you can do, and it is a cumulative thing.

There are certainly days when I feel like 40+18+15+12+12...

97!

But not as many as before.

At the last race, the first wave was <35, followed by my wave and then the women and teams. It was interesting to see the younger versions of ourselves in the first wave. I'm guessing nobody in the first wave saw their future behind them.

If I did not know my age...I'd be 25

I will be 28 soon but there are times when I act like a teenager or as if I were in my early 20's, depending on what I am doing or who I am with....silly really, but a lot of fun. Wouldn't have it any other way

I have log books from 25 years ago so I know exactly how much slower I am today at age 53 than when I was young.  It is a lot.  I have log books from 3 years ago too and know that I am a bit slower now than then.  There is no hiding from the calendar.  Nevertheless, I have managed to get to my current age with no chronic injuries that limit activity and no health problems associated with aging so I have no complaints.  I figure it is not how fast or far I run today that counts but that I keep doing it every day  for the next 30 years or so.  My athletic goal is to be like my mom when I am 83 like she is.  She has just worn out her exercise bike.  I am going to buy her a new, heavy-duty one this weekend.   I am hoping she wears this one out too.

Good post. I'm 36 but really feel about 20.

I never did like the numbers guage cause it pollutes the mind into thinking "YOU SHOULD ACT THIS WAY, ACT YOUR AGE, etc.". I still enjoy video games, I "act" mature at work, I can be a disciplinarian with my daughter and be "one of the guys" with buddies, yet at the end of every day I feel like 20.

Tech geezer, I want to be just like your mom to!!! A participant in the only race I have participated is 80+ years old (but can easily pass a 67 year old); well, he beat me!!! People like that serve as an inspiration.

Great post!

I feel about 30ish most of the time, but went away on holiday a few months a go and hung out with some friends from school for a few days. All of a sudden I felt like I was 'acting my age' again... It was fabulous....Most my friends are still studying, out partying, getting drunk...

Sometimes I feel so much older and boring in comparison...moved out years ago, got a degree, worked in two different countries (ok Aust and NZ which arent that far apart but still..) and fallen in with friends who are just that bit older...oh and a boss who doesnt really like our clients knowing Im still a 'baby'!

So im 23 going on...?

I reckon 23 is a good age. Some of the best years so far. Unfortunately I'm 29 nearing 30, so one day I'll grow up, probably 65, thats a good age to grow up I reckon.

It really is all in your head.. And you have to keep telling yourself that.. I have a little guy now and I always have to remind myself that there is still a lot I can do. Like a summersault on the living room floor.. (haven’t done one of them in years, scared myself a bit at first..)

Heard a funny quote once. “life after fifty is nothing but a series of illnesses, one of which is going to kill you.”

Same situation as yours, Downunderman. Lot's of 29's here on BT! I only wish that I had the disposable income and knowledge that I do now when I was 25.

Well, I guess I would be in my early 20's, in fact I feel better than I did in my early 20's. Back then I was putting back WAY too much beer, and smoking up to two packs of heaters a day instead of making all of my classes in college. I'm back to the same weight I was at in college after loosing 45 pounds, I can run the four miles to and from my office, in college I couldn't run at all (see the cigs) with the exception of the liquor store to get more cheap beer, I can work ing the yard without getting out of breath, I found a pair of shorts that somehow hadn't been trown out that I had in high school, and they fit again. With the exception of the gray hairs here and there, I fell better than I ever have.

So instead of 36, I'm going for 21, that way I can still enjoy a beer or two after a quick 5K.

Good Luck,
Jay

I'm 20 now...but I feel like the crap Ive dealt with in my life has made me mature beyond my years both socially and physically. When I was 15 I could pass for 21, and did on a couple occasions. I've had kids in my classes at school ask me if I was the TA when I was a freshman. Arg. The avrage age guess for me is about 24 or 25.

30 going on 31...for real. I like my age and I think that it is where I should be. Past the insecurities and just plain silliness of the twenties, more mature but still have a zest for life. I think that I will settle at being 31 indefinitely.
