Okay - so today I officially became a "runner", assuming the difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry form (someone else said that, not me). I ran a 5k and did SOOOOO much better than I thought. At 4k, I'm thinking to myself "why am I not huffing and puffing?". This is race day!! I should have my A game. Anyhow, so I started really running at that point. The last 1/8 mile was uphill, and I passed a couple of people. To that point, the only people behind me were a guy with a bum leg, and 2 women. I passed a 10 year old, an older guy, and another person on the uphill.

Now here comes the trick GAURANTEED to get you some heavy cheering when you cross the finish.

When entering into a 5k/5mile race, run the 5k and finish among the leaders of the 5miler!!!! When I crossed, I was running HARD, so they thought I was one of the 5mile leaders!!!! Haha!!!! I got HUGE cheers!!!!

Anyhow, I finished in about 31:30 which is great for me.

Go Darin!!!!

Good for you! I know pacing is the never-ending challenge for me. Am I going to fast, can I sustain this pace, am I going too slow?

Yeah - I hear you. I was very conscious of going to fast from the beginning, so I started at the rear of the pack, and was DEAD LAST for a while. I wanted to make sure I didn't run out of steam and have to walk the last mile or something. I probably over paced myself, if that's possible.

I left my brand new fancy watch/HRM at home, so I had to go by feel instead of hard numbers. That being said, I never ran this pace for any length of time while training. 5k in 31:30 is just over ten minutes a mile, right? I've only been able to train around 11:30/mile.

Great Job Darin!!

Very smart to pace yourself so you can speed up at the end.

I think you need to check your math. 5K=3.2 miles so if you are under 32 minutes you ran Under a 10 minute/mile.

I still haven't done any running races...only tris. I'm doing my first one in about a month a 10K.

This is true of me too. Especially on race day when the adrenaline is flowing hard.

Yeah I think that you went 10 minutes 8 seconds per mile. Great improvement.
