Subject: back pain - anxiety attack - heart attack
Background - starting spinning 6x a week and doing couch to 5k program 3 weeks ago.  Husband left this week for a year in Afghanistan.  Only adult in house of 3 kids.  So high stress level is a given in my life.

So, last night after dinner I develop a increasing level of pain in my back - both sides of my spine and approx. 1-2' below the shoulder blades but definatleky limited to beside the spinal muscles.  I take motrin to no relief.  Heartburn? take some tums...  no relief.  By 1130 EST I'm on phone with sister Bootygirl PST crying thinking I'm having a heart attack - booty is thinking anxiety due to stress in life right now.

I had no chest pain, no arm pain, no light headedness, no rapid pulse - I kept taking pulse.... nothing but severe back pain that mortin which always takes away pain on me didn't work this time.

While on phone I take a hair brush handle and place it in the muscle that hurts and the computer chair and press - RELIEF!  I do this for 20 minutes and feel better although still crying...

Try to sleep but by 3am I'm now thinking I need to vomit... but doesn't happen.  At 330 I try heating pad and a tv show... by 310 NO PAIN. fall asleep around 4 with heating pad on my back.  I wake at 8 with no pain at all - but feel like the muscle is very sore from releasing all the tension it was holding on to.

Calling doc to get checked out today - in meantime any thought of what happened last night?
Back muscle pain, anxiety attack or heart attack??

Good to hear you're getting checked out for real. That also frees us up to guess. I know women have different symptoms for heart attack that may not involve chest pain, but I can't remember what they are. Lots of things could cause that pain, but given the relief with the hair brush, I'm guessing muscle tension from stress. Get checked out and I hope it works out well for you.

Sounds similar to what I had - a compressed nerve.  Very painful but no heart attack.  I hope you get some relief.   I did a lot of stretching!

Cant be sure. Its easy to get an EKG and get "checked out" though you'll burn up a good chunk of your day at an ER. been there, done that. And the bills you'll get for months later is enough to drive you to drink.

I had something similar over the winter. The pain in my chest was radiating out to my back and shoulder. Never felt anything like that before. Went to the hosp. They ran tests but even morphine drip thru IV offered little relief. Pain was 9 on a scale to 10.

They did a GI workup and finally got almost instant relief with an acid-redux med for the stomach.

Long story short, strong suspicion I was on my way to an ulcer. Suspect: prolonged use of ibuproen. Iteresting to note that triathletes are known to pop Ibu after all the ways we beat up our bodies. GI specialist read me the riot act on prolonged use of Ibu.

That was my story anyway.

I have the same symptoms occasionally.  Scared the Hell out of me the first time.

Diagnosed with acid reflux.  Manifests itself as a stabbing pain between my shoulder blades.  Put on a regimine of Zantac and that helped.  With me is comes and goes.  I can go months without an episode then have issues for a week then nothing.

Have not been able to pinpoint any food triggers either but stress does seem to be a catalyst.

May I ask why you didn't call an ambulance to at least look at you if you thought you were having a heart attack. Not to scare you, but an untreated heart attack can do one of two things.

1: Resolve itself, but leave you with permanent damage to heart muscle.

2: Kill you due to lack of oxygen to the heart muscle, putting your heart into a lethal rhythm.

If an ambulance comes, you don't have to go to the hospital. They can evaluate you, for free. They can do an EKG to tell right then and there if you're having a heart attack. If not and everything's okay, then you don't have to go, it's totally your choice if you want them to take you or not.

In any result, I'm glad you're okay
