Duke Liver used to be at the end of July. It has since been cancelled. Not sure why but I don't think the turnout was ever that great compared to other events, and the heat and tough course undoubtedly played into that. Correct me if I am wrong though. Reason I raise this is that a HIM in NC in July has already been tested, without steller participation (and it was close to where a lot of people live).

I volunteered at the last Duke Half before it ceased to exist. It had good participation and was looked at as a very hard half due to the run and bike courses. It died as a result of the Augusta Half taking people away from them.

When I've done White Lake Half, i would train for it by running my long runs wearing fleece jackets in 70 degree temps. Worked great to similate heat!
