I am doing this race. I have not done it before, but I have done the olympic here. The venue is awesome!. Transition is right out of the water and there is a canopy of trees to provide shade there. The streets for a few blocks around the transition are blocked off and thus there is no traffic coming out of transition to deal with.

FSSeries does a great job and it is very organized. The course is flat. The town is very receptive to having triathletes and I received a survey after the last time to find out what I did in the town while I was there.

BTW: This race cost 2/3 of B2B half that goes off the same day.

Agree with Doug, Little Washington is an awesome race venue.

Swim is calm clean water. Temp very cold, even with a wetsuit (63 degrees, I think - i might like a neoprene cap next time around). It was my fastest swim pace ever in a race because I wanted to be out of the cold water. My fingers were cold in T1 making it a little hard to put on shoes and such.

Bike was flat and mostly good roads, not too windy, air temperature was good. I do remember wearing a light jacket and i was fine. Course well staffed with volunteers marking the way.

Run was super awesome. Lots of friendly folks cheering you on and college girls from ECU staffing the aid stations along the way. Flat except for a bridge. Nice scenery past the waterfront and town.

Great race schwagg too. I love the hoodie we got instead of the usual t-shirt that comes in a race packet. FS Series does a fabulous job at race production.

Parking is a little ways off from the transition area. I think I had two backpacks and rode my bike in. maybe 1/5 mile or less, just enough to be a little bit of a hike before race.

Still debating to do this race again or not. I'm not in great running shape at the moment (and I don't care, muhahahaha). Other than that, I'd totally be there.

I am planning on this being my first Half.  Volunteered for the Half last year and remember everyone looking very cold coming out of the water.  I am no where close to being ready and this little fire we have here in the swamp is making it rough to train but I am hoping to be ready in time..  I love racing in Washington Park....

Meant to say that parking is 1/2 mile away from race site. 1/5 mile would be nothing at all, lol. It's still on my radar, Doug. I'm just having trouble being committed to racing this year.

I understand, but remember, racing with your friends makes it more fun! And we don't care how fast your are!

I did the OLY in July and I am planning on doing the half.... unless I absolutely bomb the Augusta 70.3 in September.

The OLY was fun.  FS Series is organized and has its act together.

My goal is just to be under 7 hours and everyone still talks to me.

But if my achillies doesn't get good enough to run on soon, I'll be struggling to make the 8 hour cutoff. At least my swim is getting better, maybe I can improve enough on the bike to leave myself some cushion.

I did it last year, it is a great race, and a great area to race.  It was a little cold coming out of the water, but not too bad.  Some of the roads were pretty rough last year in certain sections, other sections were great, but overall a good ride, especially for your first half.  The run is nice, mostly flat with a little bit of rolling around the bridge.

Oh, and you can park closer than .5 miles away.  There is parking on the road available, if you get there early enough.  There is also a great little italian place for dinner, although the name of it escapes me for the moment.

Glad I saw this thread.  I was training for IMWI but now I'm just recovering from a broken collar bone, scapula and ribs.  This may have just become my "A" race for the year.

Have also been considering this race (didn't sign up for B2B in time), so glad to hear positive things from prior racers!  I'll probably register in the next 10 days or so if I do it.  Need to get back on the bike too...

I'll have to remember that. At first I thought I wouldn't get a chance to eat there because I drive anything under 2 hours race morning, but then it dawned on me... I won't be done until nearly dinner time! Surprised

I normally drive down race morning but am thinking about staying down the night before for the Half do to the fact I have to drive to DC after the Half.  My wife is running the Marine Corp Marathon the next day...  Long weekend but worth it..

I'm biting the bullet and doing this one as my 1st half.  Should be interesting, straight from sprint distance to half...haha.

I wonder if a sleeveless wetsuit will work, or if I need to invest in a full?

Sleeveless would be fine, the water was not too cold, it was the air

The water was something like 63 degrees. It was the coldest swim I have ever done and I swam extra hard just to stay warm. I had a full sleeve suit. There was a woman from Norway with no wetsuit on at all. You will be okay with sleeveless, so I wouldn't invest in a full suit. However, you will be cold! Perhaps get a neoprene cap. What do they say, 20% body heat escapes thru your head??

disclaimer: I am a total cold wuss!

I'll be doing this race as my first HIM if I do alright in the White Lake International 17 days from now. My wife did the Washington Olympic, and we agree with the general consensus that FS and the venue are awesome.
