Sunny
Total Time = 2h 54m 49s
Overall Rank = 161/316
Age Group = 30-35
Age Group Rank = 22/51
Pre-race routine:

Got up and drank one cup of coffee. Jig picked me up at 5am. Ate 1/2 of a clif bar and drank some water on the 1.5 hr drive to Livonia.
Event warmup:

My warm up consisted of talking to lots of great people(Haley, Karl, Richard,Randell,Jig) and setting up my T. Because of the cool weather, I did not partake of a warmup swim.
Swim
  • 32m 21s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Navigation was dead-on, I think. I actually swam into a bouy on the way back. On the 2 leg, I was swimming by myself. Everyone else was either way to my right or way to my left, but the bouy was straight ahead of me. Either my brain was hypoxic, or I was right-on.

This was a great swim for me. I have come a long way this season in learing how to swim in a race. My times have not improved much(if any), but I feel so much better during the swim now when compared to my first two races this season.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe swim harder. I held back a little because I heard the bike and run course were so demanding(and they were).
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

No socks for the bike. Worked fine. Tried to remain calm.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to transition with shoes already on bike.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 40s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 17.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Held back on the bike, especially the last 4 miles, because I heard that the run was so hard. In retrospect, that was a good idea, but then again, this is a race. Not pleased with my bike performance. Could have gone faster.

Took a gel at mile 3 and mile 23.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little more next time, but not much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Put socks on for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Have tougher feet.
Run
  • 52m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a wonderful run. Jig ran me down at 1.5 mile and we ran together the rest of the run. I had alot left at the end. Should have picked the pace up earlier.
What would you do differently?:

Pick the pace up at mile 3 instead of mile 5.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate and drank. Talked to more people. Complained about the hills. It was great to see everyone. Congrats to steamy for the AG win!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first ever race at this distance, I had no idea what to expect. No athletic ability.

Event comments:

This was a great race. I LOVE this distance. Hopefully I will be able to race an oly again someday. Unfortunately this is probably my last oly for several years, unless I do one early in the season next year. I have my IM in June and July 1 I start back to work and will have little/no time to train/race. Its been a great season and I look forward to my HIM in october.

James, great race! However, I don't think your sighting was right on if you ran into a buoy. Watch out, they are pretty small and can sneak up on you.

James, killer race.  Man, you smoked that run.  Nice work.  I finished totally exhausted and you still had gas in the tank (I'm jealous).  Now, its onto that HIM and then IM training begins!

Nice race James! Pacing on the bike is not easy, most of just want to hammer it & then bonk on the run. Great job & way to avoid those "chicken trucks!"

Great race!  I envy you for being able to hold back on the bike and save some energy for the run- that's something I am trying to get better about.  Congrats on completing your first olmpic distance tri!

Great race James!  It was nice to finally put a face to the name on Saturday.

Glad that you got the distance experience before the Half next month!  You'll probably kill that too.  My plans are to be done in Clermont as an athletic supporter for Comet's big one.

Thanks for the shout-out on the AG win.
