Subject: Refund for cancelled Triathlon
I entered a triathlon on May 29, 2011 that was subsequently cancelled. I have emailed the promoter 4 times over the past 2 months about the the refund with absolutely no response! I believe I signed up through Active.com. Should I contact them about the refund or can that only come from the promoter? When asking questions of this promoter about his triathlon classes and other triathlon events via email, he was rather rude. This guy does smaller triathlons in the Phoenix area. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you get your refund?

Well I know when I signed up it said no refunds at all no matter what. But if they canceled it, I would definately get in touch with the responsible race director.

If weather is the reason for cancellation, there is no refund. The races I've done state that pretty clearly during the registration process. Why was yours cancelled?

I have had a race cancelled because the RD failed to secure special duty police officers by a certain deadline.

The registration was exclusively through active.com, but the refund came in the mail in the form of a check from the race organization...not a refund to my credit card through active.com.  My guess is that since it was the RD's fault, he had to eat the loss on the active.com fees as well...because everyone got a FULL refund.

The reason for the cancellation was, "not enough people signed up." From one of the posts, now I understand why he was trying to push us into joining another one of his triathlons in lieu of a refund (he sent one email out with the cancellation and trying to get us to join another one of his tri's) . I decided to do a HIM, which he does not offer, instead of the shorter tri's that he offers.

"not enough people signed up" pretty much equates to "I didn't promote it well enough" or "I judged the market incorrectly."

IANAL but I'd be surprised if even having specific language in the waiver would allow for that.

He took the money but then decided not to provide the service. If he's being tight-fisted about a refund it's probably because he's lost a fair amount on that race already and is low on cash.

Mine was cancelled this morning due to weather.  No refund.  This is the second cancellation in the four years this tri has been around.  So I've paid for four triathlons, but only raced two.  Not ideal.
