Anyone have any experience with this type of over use injury?  I am having some foot issues and think this may be what i have.  top of foot is swollen close to ankle, and very painful.  It gets worse with any type of movement and of course by the end of the day it is very painful.  Going to try for an orthopedic appointment on Monday, and am hoping my season is not over.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I had a navicular stress reaction and a calcaneous stress fracture at the same time. They showed up on an MRI. Unfortunately I was in the dreaded boot for 4 weeks. Mine went undiagnosed for a long time because the podiatrist thought I had tendinitis. I rested it for weeks but I eventually had a pinched nerve from the swelling and got a 2nd opinion & MRI. Since it healed, I have had no problems.
It could be some other things too. Such as your shoes or some tendinitis. Getting it checked by a good ortho is the best idea! Good luck!

I know the exact pain you are talking about.  When you see the ortho on Monday, ask about the possibility of having an accessory navicular bone - basically an extra navicular bone that sits on top of the "real" navicular. I had this and it was misdiagnosed for several years until last summer when I had an incident while competing in a tri. I was pushed at the start of the swim, trapping my foot between the boat ramp and some rocks. It broke my accessory navicular as well as the real navicular. My original doctor misdiagnosed the injury as arthritis at sent me to P/T. The P/T said there is no way this is arthritis so he sent me to an orthopedic surgeon. She took one look at the x-ray and shook her head in disbelief over the original diagnosis.

As to ending your season, it obviously will depend on what your doctor says. I did finish the tri and continued to train for two more months on the injury, but only because the misdianosis led me to believe I wasn't injured. Listen to your doctor but also listen to your body (Many doctors do not understand what we do to train for a tri).

If you want more details on the journey I have been on the past year because of my injury, let me know.

blues2play what ended up happening here?  I rolled my ankle real bad ~2 weeks ago playing basketball.   I put on a boot and thought it would eventually heal.  It didn't heal, so I waited for a week to schedule X-Ray at the Orthopedic.  Said no break but suggested I get MRI because it was nasty looking.   Fast forward another week and I got an MRI.  Another few days later Dr calls and says I have bad bone bruising and a stress fracture in my Navicular bone.    Next week I will back to another specialist.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this happen and how long they were out.   I almost cried when the Dr told me that his guess was a few more weeks in the boot, which is ~8 weeks total.  Awful!

Can't imagine what getting an appointment will be like after obamacare (but I digress).
