Subject: 310XT power and cadence - zero averaging or not?

The latest update for the 310XT included the possibility of zero-averaging for power and cadence (in the past, time not pedaling was not included in the averages). The default now is to turn on zero-averaging.

Are people leaving this turned on? Why or why not?

I thought it defaulted to including zeros?

I like to exclude zeros on cadence.  Otherwise I don't get an idea of how fast I'm pedaling when I'm pedaling.  I don't care if I don't pedal going down a hill, but when I'm pedaling I want to be close to 90 RPM.  And the only way to know that is to ignore the zeros.

I let it average in zeros on power because otherwise I don't think it's an accurate portrayal of work.  Like I said on another post about auto-pause and why I don't use it...rest influences the workout.  I could push a LOT more watts if I only pushed them for a minute at a time then rested.  That would inflate my average power number and it wouldn't be realistic.

Here's what I have it set for and why...

Power, include zero. If I coast down hill, I'm resting, so theoretically, I should have fresher legs for the next climb. By including zero, I get a true picture of my efforts during a ride.

Cadence, exclude zero. I'm interested in seeing my cadence when I pedal. Obviously, if the descents are steep enough, then I probably won't pedal, but I don't want that to show in my log as then my average cadence for the ride will be abnormally low. I do have a normal cadence I ride at and I want to be certain that I don't see too much change from that in any given ride.

As above, exclude 0s for cadence, include for power. Which sucks cause living in a hilly place, and the XT previously not including 0s for power my previous years history is all overinflated for comparison. But it's so worth it since now we have the 3s and 30s power averaging rather than just instant and lap!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've swapped cadence to stop zero averaging. I'm still not sure on the power. I ride in a hilly area also, and end up spinning out a fair amount of the time so I stop pedaling. I don't want to have my power misrepresented due to this, either. I try to use power to help me pace myself during races, and having it too low is just as bad as having it too high. I'll have to try both and see what I like better.

Doesn't Golden Cheetah or Training Peaks allow you to check both?

I've been in the same situation with training a bit on Skyline Drive, which is the appalachin mountains - so my entire long ride is either climbing or coasting.  Thus, the power would in theory be skewed.  But I find that by including them I can then ensure that all of my power files are equally represented.

Both TP and GC also allow you to view NP as well.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I've been using RaceDay for evaluation, but I'm thinking of switching to GC. The price is better, and I mostly just look at the CP to see where I should be training.

Hi

I was looking to find out if the garmin 310xt could actually be set to include the zeros in power and came across this thread which seems to suggest yes!  That's great as I'd prefer to see my average power dropping when I'm freewheeling.  Seeing the info about the cadence I think as most suggest here I would do the opposite and ignore the zeros in cadence.

So now its a question not of if I can do it but how I can do itSmile

Could you tell me how I go about modifiying these preferences

Many thanks

Simon

Welcome to BT Simon! You just need to update the firmware to 3.7 on the 310xt. Unfortunately the firmware is not perfect (the altitude gain/loss is about 3x what is should be and you have to enable swim mode each time you use it). The altitude issue gets corrected when you upload to Garmin though.
