Total Time = 2h 01m 47s
Overall Rank = 370/423
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 37/38
Pre-race routine:

Nothing magical - got ready and headed down to the race early.
Event warmup:

Loosened up - swam a lap to the first bouy and back
Tried to stay warm - lots of rain and wind
Swim
  • 23m 7s
  • 874 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is the pinnacle of my swimming acumen! I felt smooth and controlled even when I left the inlet. The water then began to rock me side to side - all of my OWS had been with little to no chop, so I got a little motion sick and had difficulty navigating, but I felt OK. I experienced my first advantage by drafting someone - I think it absolutely helped.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this is the best swim pace I have ever had in competition.
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

A good transition - it took a little while to jog the 400 meters from the transition mat, uphill to my bike rack, but I made a smooth transition thereafter - didn't bother with socks, gloves or sunglasses as everything was soaked by the rain.
What would you do differently?:

Work on a different kind of brick - maybe swim, then get out and run.
Bike
  • 49m 19s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.12 mile/hr
Comments:

After T1, went uphill to the mount line and jumped on. I found it hard to maintain a smooth cadence on the hills - then my computer cadence went out with all the rain.
What would you do differently?:

I would have pushed harder. I do not ride in the train - have had 2 bad falls and would rather finish with a slower pace than wipe out and DNF.
Still - had I pushed it, I think I would have made my overall goal of less than 2 hrs.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Made a good transition off the bike, but fought with my socks again - pitched them and ran without
What would you do differently?:

No problems - smooth transition
Run
  • 43m 29s
  • 3.12 miles
  • 13m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Course was very muddy as it had been raining for over 2 hrs - course was well marked on a trail through the marsh section of the park and back up over a hill before resuming the trail towards the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I should have pushed it harder. I was wiped at this point - just not making the time I expected.
Post race
Warm down:

Shoook it loose, walked to get the soreness out - at least I didn't get cramps like in other competitions.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have pushed the bike and the run harder.

Event comments:

Good Race - I really enjoyed it despite my inability to break the 2 hour mark. Good race to end the season with. The whole affair was well run and handled very professionally.

Congrats on the swim and a great end of the season. Sounds like conditions were tough with the rain!
