i'm looking into buying a bike for some commuting and training rides. budget is about ~$300, $400 tops. for this sort of price, my options seem to be either an early 90's bike with a 105 or 600 components, or a newer bike with sora/tiagra components.

which will hold up better?

I just bought a 2011 bike with 105 on it. It is better than the 10 year old Ultegra on my last bike.
