Subject: Need Help Calculating Time?

I can't believe I am really asking this question, but here it goes.

I ran 3 miles in the time of 23mins 30secs, so what is my time per mile?

The answer I always come up with is 7:83, but that does not make sense to me because how do you have :83 minutes?

So the next step would be to divide :83 by 60 and then you would come up with the time of 8:23 per mile?

23:30 = 23.5 minutes

23.5 minutes / 3 miles = 7.83 minutes per mile

The trick is to take the 0.83 and figure out how many seconds that ends up being.  Since there are 60 seconds in a minute and you're looking for 83% of a minute, you can 0.83 * 60 = 50 seconds.

So you were 7:50 per mile.

If you put your time and distance in your training blog here in BT, it will calculate your pace.

KathyG - 2011-08-21 5:57 PM If you put your time and distance in your training blog here in BT, it will calculate your pace.

I second KathyG's suggestion.

In addition to the handy pace calculator function, there are a variety of other useful functions.

More importantly, when you ask a question in the future about training, the generous folks here on BT can look at your training experience and make helpful suggestions relevant to your specific situation.
