Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: How do you wash your workout clothes? Totally informal and unscientific poll--just to have a place to gather a bunch of ideas :) feel free to click all the methods you regularly use and post comments. I was surprised how many folks just put them in with the regular wash, using regular liquid detergent and (gasp) even putting them in the dryer ... I thought all that stuff decreased the performance and/or quickly wore down dry-tech clothing. In the U.S., my tech clothes mostly hung around in wet balls and/or stuffed in bags forever, until I was forced down to my last ones and really had to wash ... then it would take a couple of Penguin washings on whatever the vigorous (but cold water) setting was on the washing machine to get the horrifying stench and sometimes even mold/stains out. Rarely (but ideally) they'd all get hand-washed in cold with Penguin and line-dried. Only slightly more often they went into gentle cycle with Penguin and line-dried. Once in a while they would just go in with regular wash, and dryer. Here in Indonesia if they are really gross I soak then suds them in baby shampoo and vinegar solution, then air-dry. Sometimes I can get Penguin wash and I use it at half the recommended amount and it gets everything squeaky clean anyway. <---correction: the Hobbit Maid does all this. All hand wash and line-dry. |

But in all seriousness she's a stay at home mom so she does do the laundry lol. Regular wash and just hang dry. The detergent is a sport wash if memory serves... Edited by cornick 2011-08-25 7:02 AM |

Payson, AZ | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I just wash then normally. Some stuff goes in the dryer some stuff doesn't. I just follow that handy dandy little tag on the clothes with the instructions. I never use fabric softener. Every now and then I have to use vinegar but if I just drape the clothes over the hamper until it dries a bit I noticed I can get away without having to do that |

Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I've got a stick dryer in the laundry room with a washable rug under it. That's where everything goes when I first get back so it can air out and dry out a bit until the next workout when new clothing takes its place. Tide with fabreze with the normal clothing. Lysol rinse breaks up all the soap to the point that I can tell when I don't use it. Line dry all the spandex/lycra clothing. Race season, when the laundry triples and the dryer sheet usage gets cut in half. |

Regular 853 | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I used to just use regular detergent and occasionally add vinegar to the wash and soak. They seemed clean until I put the shirts back on. Just a few minutes of wearing the shirt I detected the faint stench of old stink. I started using Penguin wash and never have that problem. Then I couldn't find Penguin, I could only find WIN and it worked too. Now I can't find WIN, but I can get Penguin again. I have tried the Tide Sport, but in my opinion it just perfumes everything, and we have senstive skin in this household. My hubby breaks out when I wash his stuff in Tide. The Penguin or WIN never caused skin problems. jami |

Member 58 | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I just hop in the shower with them on and rinse them off and use a mild soap in the shower on them and then once a week I wash them but dont dry. I have a big tube sink in my laundry room that I hang them over to air dry. |

Veteran 427 | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? Hm, I never tried a specific sports detergent. I used to swear by the vinegar pre-wash and Charlies soap in the normal cycle. I'm open to change, though, because I've lost an item or three to stinkiness. I *always* air dry, though.

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? Never heard of or seen Penguin. Most of my laundry is workout clothes . Everything gets hung out to dry first, unless it's the Sunday brick because the Sunday laundry begins right after that. There's kind of a heirarchy of care (triage?). Run stuff gets washed with everything else in Tide/cold water and air dried (I don't have a drier). I have shorts that have lasted 15 years this way, so it seems okay. Older bike shorts likewise. Swim suits I rinse with fresh water right afterwards, air dry, and hand wash with some kind of delicates wash from Thailand (can't read the label) every week or so. Tri stuff, and my one pair of really good bike shorts, gets the white-glove treatment since it's so ****expensive--immediate rinse, then hand wash in delicates wash, roll out excess water with towel, air dry. I'm the maid around here. |

I've heard good things about Charlie's soap, glad you brought it up! Oh and the poster above you--I forgot to add "shower wash" to the poll, I do that when the maid is on holiday |

It's a common brand of sports-specific detergent. (penguin.jpg) Attachments ---------------- penguin.jpg (5KB - 13 downloads) |

Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? Never heard of Penguin either. I just do a normal wash and air dry everything except for swimsuits. I hand rinse those until they get really old and stretched out. The old suits I wear for open water swims in the lake or pond and they start to turn a little brown. I can't get that out washing by hand so those go in the washing machine sometimes. |

I could not IMAGINE not washing them after every workout. I've read here and other places where people go two/three or more workouts without washing and it makes me itch just reading it. |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I shower in whatever I worked out in, then rinse, and hang dry. This gives me a lot of mileage out of them. (no pun intended) When i do have enough stuff for a load of laundry, it's cold water wash, detergent (I use the unscented, but for no particular reason), a little bit of liquid oxyclean. No fabric softener. I hang mine dry--but DH's stuff goes in the drier. |

Extreme Veteran 464 Sault Ste (Siberia) Marie | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I wash mine after every use, and depending on how hard I used them, they may get a vinegar and hand soap hand scrub before hitting the washer. No matter what though it is always cold water and any of my tech gear or swim stuff is air dried. T's and shorts or sweats get thrown in the dryer. |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I will wear the same pair of smartwool socks for a few weeks at a go. :p Seriously, showering in yoru clothes is the way to go. Okay, yeah, you do get some weird looks sometimes at the gym, but whatever. The exception to this is things like jackets, tights, vests--i.e. outerwear. No showering in those. Also, I don't normally rinse out the bike jersey (but I do for a shimmel)/long sleeve shirt. Basically, the layer next to my skin gets rinsed in the shower. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? I used WIN for years and now that it's not available I went back to the regular Tide that I use for everything. I can already tell that the clothes aren't as fresh. I need to go to the sporting goods store and stock up on some Penguin, which I think I can buy locally at a few places. I really hope it does the trick... No fabric softener. I do put loose fitting tech Ts, sport bras and socks into the dryer on low. I never dry my favorite tight fitting clothes for fear they will shrink or otherwise get damaged, like my Nike running pants which are well worth the big price tag. I want those to last as long as possible. I care less about the ts I get from races. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? P.S. I looked at the Tide for Sport, which is only regular Tide with Febreeze (as noted in the poll). That seems like a marketing ploy to me, but I will consider it if the "real" sport wash is not available. I definitely think that regular Tide is not cutting it. |

x2. I run with a girl that I don't think holds the same philosphy and I'm always trying to stay away from her as it makes me want to gag. |

Veteran 109 San Mateo, California | Subject: RE: How do you wash your workout clothes? Air dry first. With two triathletes in the house, pretty much every doorknob around is occupied with drying out athletic clothes during the two-a-day workout periods. We have a large supply of Febreze just to keep the place from smelling like a locker room. Win detergent (fine in high efficiency washers) and line dry. Swimsuits get a fresh water rinse right after each swim and run through with detergent maybe every couple weeks. |
