Total Time = 1h 48m 43s
Overall Rank = 73/334
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/44
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early and ate breakfast 3h prior to race start. Cereal, peanut butter toast, and banana. Plus two cups of coffee.

Sipped water and Powerade until race time.
Event warmup:

Quick bike ride to make sure it was operating well and get familiar with transition area.

Short run to break a light sweat and check the start.

Light stretching.
Swim
  • 16m 41s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt good. Swam a solid crawl the whole way and tracked fairly straight. My navigation after the last turn (into the beach) was bad because of fogged goggles and facing the sun.

Surprised by the slow split. I did 900y in the pool Tuesday at 14:40, and expected race environment to carry me faster.
What would you do differently?:

Ditch these crappy goggles. And train the swim more. My last race was over a month ago, and I've had difficulty scheduling swim wo's since then.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Long climb up wood steps to the transition area adds time. The actual technical parts of T1 went well. Did not have a wetsuit and ride with running shoes and toe clips. Just had to rinse the feet and put on socks and shoes. Helmet on aero bars. Smooth.
Bike
  • 47m 58s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 20.64 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really strong. Like my first race, I found myself going noticeably faster than training rides. It didn't bother me this time and I just kept pushing.

The hillier course was tougher with my older bike with downtube shifters.

This race bills the bike portion as 18 miles. But my bike computer and the gmap pedometer both say 16.5 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was a good ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Entrance to park was slightly downhill, which allowed time to loosen the toe clips and coast with body on one side of the bike.
Run
  • 41m 19s
  • 5 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt good right away. Bricks work.

Just can't seem to up my pace. That'll be on the list for next year. The last hill on a hot day was tough - made it hard to put the hammer down in the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, but will need more track and hill work next season.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, talking with other athletes, walking around.

Hit the food line after my buddy finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Very infrequent swims in the last month. No speed or hill work running the last month.

Event comments:

Nice routes, clean lake. This was a great venue and the race was run well, despite what I'd heard about poor race organization on other sites.
