My 305 won't make it thru the full 17 hours of an Ironman.

Any suggestions?

...Besides S/B/R faster.

My thought is to just use it on the run. But what to do about tracking HR on the bike.

Thanks!

melbel1038 - 2011-09-24 7:56 PM they are so cheap these days.  Can you have two? or borrow one from a friend to have 2 the day of the race.  Leave 1 turned off in transition and then switch after bike?

+1

I plan to use my Edge 305 on bike, then Forerunner 305 on run.  Will turn each on as step 1 in transitions.  While the basic electronics are same in both, displays & features are oriented better to 1 sport (e.g. Edge has ext mini-USB & can display up to 7 data fields (vs FR's 4) but lacks 'pace' feature).  I will still have basic speedo in bike for back-up.

External battery pack works well with Edge's mini-USB port.  I used one of these Energizer units zipp tied under my bike's stem & after 11hr road cycling event my Edge 305 still indicated 3/4 charge.  Just be sure to use Lithium (not alkaline) batteries.

One problem is that we tend to put them on the charger/data cable for a period of time after every workout/event. This causes the battery to have a small memory window. What you should do is to allow the battery to run right down every once in a while. After downloading your data, take it off the base and leave it on till it turns it self off. Then charge it right back up again.

Actually, I went for a 20 mile hike today. Took 10 hours (8000ft)...  I was actually amazed my 305 made it through to 9:55. I got one message. I realize that does not help on a an IM... well at least not me but still I was surprised.

I would go with the 910 but try to find a newer used one, if that makes sense. I am having the same battery problem with my 3 year old 410 running watch and decided to upgrade. I was fortunate enough to find a used 910 with HR monitor and quick release kit for $225 that was less than a year old.
