Subject: TT bike frame size (P3)
Just wondering about peoples opinions about the fit of a 51cm Cervelo P3 for someone who is only 160cm tall (inseam 75cm). It felt fine when I had a rough bike fit and ride on the trainer in one bike shop who said it would be a good fit with the saddle in the forward position. However in another bike shop I was told that a 51cm P3 frame would definately be far too big for me. I would rather not go down a size so I can still use my 700c race wheels. I currently ride a size 43 (XS) Giant road bike.  Are there any shorter people out there who ride a 51cm TT bike?  Or can you recommend a TT bike for someone of my height (preferably allowing me to still use my race wheels)?

Sorry but it's absolutely impossible to answer your question. If you take 3 people all the same height, could end up on 3 different sizes from the same manufacturer... and when you then add the factor of different manufacturers to the mix, all bets are off.

The reason why is very simple... each person will be very different. Body geometry, i.e. length of arms, legs, upper body, lower body, etc. etc.; flexibility and core strength, how low can you go and can you keep your position there without loosing power; type of racing, short course/long course; previous/current injuries; terrain, flat, windy, rolling hills, steep but short climbs, long but gradual climbs, steep and long climbs; etc. etc. etc.

Keep in mind that a 51cm bike will vary vastly from manufacturer to manufacturer as there's no standard to how a bike size is measured, or for that matter, what a given number size actually means in terms of dimensions...

That's on the short end for that size.  it might work, but more likely not.  As stated above, it's really impossible to say as every body is so different.

I appreciate the desire to stick with one size of wheel (and tires, and tubes).

As others have said, it's hard to say, but your inseam is pretty long for your height.  I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam and depending on the bike, I'm anywhere from a 48 to a 52.  If you go with the 51, you probably won't get too many 'your seat's too high' comments.  Wait... wrong forum. Tongue out
