Hi All, I find myself singing Hymms whilst cycling and running old traditionals like " How Great Thou Art", "What a friend we have in Jesus " etc as well as giving thanks for the oppurtunities to be active and out in his wonderful creation. Cool

My wife and I were running the Portland Marathon quite a few years ago and there was a point in which she was pretty down. We were in an industrial section (read boring) with no crowds and just long straight pavement. We started hearing a band in the distance as we got closer we could hear that they were singing "Yes Lord, yes Lord, yes yes Lord" and it was so encouraging.

That song had surprised us again in Corner Brook Newfoundland when we were sitting in our broken down VW van in a Wal-mart parking lot waiting for a transmission shop to open. A local church had "church" in the parking lot and once again it took us a few minutes to catch on to that song. We got out of our van, grabbed our chairs and left the pity party to go to church.

Since that time, just thinking those words really helps keep me going.

cbrave - 2011-10-03 12:27 PM Maybe a bit long but I really like Psalm 121 - especially when climbing hills. "I lift up my eyes to the mountains -- where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth"

This one has just been added to me list, will try it out next time I get on a hill and think about getting off and walking it. Thanks

I'm detailing my bike (training for my first IM in 2012).  I'm going to put a couple of bible verses on my bike.  Just a couple; don't want it to look like a crass billboard.  Suggestions?  My fav right now:

"Be truly glad.  There is wonderful joy ahead!" 1 Peter 1:6

Not a believer myself, but I WAS raised by Southern Baptists, so I hope that counts for something?

Of all the suggestions, the one you opened with is still the best IMHO. I would put that on my bike no matter the underlying context. Peter is the rock that rocks.

a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast with Nick Waninger, an up-and-coming pro the morning before Augusta 70.3. Nick is sponsored by the "Tri For Him" team (sorry, you have to Google it as I am on a stupid iPad and cannot add links) which seems like an up-and-up organization for Christians who enjoy the multisport lifestyle.

Here's a great one...

Psalm 137:9 - “Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.”

Just puts you in the mind of whoever wrote the bible.

sorry to go against the grain ... how about "He Wept" from John 11:35.  It is a complete verse, and maybe the shortest verse in the bible.  The verse portrays Jesus' sympathy/emotion toward His people.

Very cool choice, reminds me that Jesus experienced all and every emotion we do...I like Romans 8:1,  "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"

This, for me. Whenever the darkest spots during a race hit (and as far as I am able, in life generally, whether I think it's going well or not so well) I revel in the very fact of being ALIVE and MOVING and ABLE to BE, and I thank God for the gifts.

I do love the 4th chapter of Philippians as well, and I read it before any kind of challenging event in my life.

Of course, I also get really irritated when verses are taken out of context for all kinds of reasons, even good ones, and yet that's EXACTLY what I do too. Heh! That's the literary snob in me rather than the Christian, though.

Biblical inspiration comes in all sorts of forms, in all sorts of things we might be doing or thinking.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength

They will soar on wings like eagles.

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not grow faint.

A bit off beat, but...as  a buddy used to say there's some biblical HTFU (harden that fellow up):

II Thessalonians 3:10

"...If a man will not work, he shall not eat." (NIV)

Good Lord helps those who help themselves.  Gotta do your part getting to that next aid station for your nourishment (both physical & spiritual) Wink

Bike and not fall over.

Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God...

I'm hoping that will still my busy sleepless mind tonight.

Not a verse but, early in the bike during my first IM I past a bagpipe player bellowing Amazing Grace! That carried me the rest of the way!

Another Christian checking in! It's not a verse, but I carry "Through Christ, I Will" on my Road ID bracelet. I wear it every day - not just for training runs/rides. It makes me happy - can't wait to see the pictures of your bike

Was looking through a bunch of photo's from this years Cape Argus ride in South Africa, and it brought back some pleasant memories, one of which was saying grace at the start of a big climb, " for what wer are about to receive, may the Lord make us truely grateful" and everytime the legs started to wobble, I just repeated grace :-)  the amen part came at the top.

I'm new to the Iron lifestyle, but I find it lends itself to greater discipline in all facets in my life.  It cuts through the crap and gets you to realize the things that are truly important.  Family, friends, peace, generosity, radical forgiveness, gratitude, love, and grace for all.

So as we draw closer to Christmas, yet again I find myself wondering how we ( Western world ) went from saying Merry Christmas to saying Happy Holidays? What am I missing? Whilst I am not 100% comfortable with how materialistic etc this time of year has become, I am 110% unhappy with the change of emphasis.

Am I alone in this ?

My vote is for Isaiah 40:31 and Phil 4:13 - good for you and GOOD LUCK!!

x 2

Both are my favorites.

Also - "Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident!  Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go. " Joshua 1:9

Not alone.  I think a lot of Christians have this struggle.  Seeing how people changed Christmas to xmas, and carrying only about what they get under the tree.

I have decided to change what I can - meaning I'll say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays.  I'll volunteer and help others instead of thinking only of what I can get out of this time of year, etc.  I don't think it helps to be sad.  Make changes and let others see your light shine.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
