Hi everyone.  Had an amazing race and race experience in Louisville.  I'll definitely be back.  Was sad to see lots of athletes with flats due to tacks.  I was having a perfect race until mile 6 or 7 of the run.

Here's the stats from Runtri.com

Ironman Louisville 2012 Results Analysis

The 2227 finishers of 2012 Ironman Louisville appear to have tackled the harshest conditions of the last four years, with 14% DNS rate, an incredibly high 14% DNF rate, and the highest average time since 2009: 13:41. If the conditions in the 2010 race were considered highly extreme, but 2012 may have even been worse. Needless to say, Ironman Louisville remains ranked near the top of our Toughest Ironman Triathlon ratings

I'm in for 2013, my first IM. Some of the comments are very humbling and give me great motivation to work  hard over the next year to complete the course on the day. Training started today with my first hour of private swim coaching.

Great job everyone!

Didn't see the one on the course, but I saw some for sale at a gas station on the drive home. Really, had no idea anyone still had cassettes on their shelves for sale.

Question for Louisville veterans who are still checking in.
What do you think is the best strategy for lining up for the swim start?
Next time, I'm tempted to sleep late and just plan on waiting near the start for the end of the line.
Has anyone ever done it this way?
As long as the 17hr cutoff isn't a concern, i just don't see the need to get in line at 6 only to walk an extra mile and still start at 7:25.....

If you arent worried about any of the cutoffs I would just wait near the docks and let the line come to you.  There isnt a reason to walk the mile to the end of the line.  I had a friend drive me to T1, wait for me while I aired up my tires and filled my bottles.  Then drove us over to the swim start.  We passed hundreds of people walking from T1 to the swim start.  We were not in any kind of hurry but we were in a spot in line that got us in the water at 7:04.  The guy I was rooming with was worried about cutoff, so he woke up ealry, got in line to get into T1 then wlaked over to the swim start and probably started 10 minutes after me.  Either way, avoid the mile walk from T1 to swim start.  Get a ride if you can.

I have done IM Louisville the past two years, and I have jumped in the water at 7:17 and 7:13.  I don't think the time I got in the water had any real effect on my races, but after this year my attitude has changed about the swim start line.  I took a ho-hum attitude about it but IF I do this race again, that will change.

How strong you are as a swimmer and biker should help you devise your strategy.  This year, the out and back on the bike as well as most of the bike aid stations were very dangerous, IMHO.  Anytime in the future that I might do this race, I am going to try and get in line very early or very late (to hopefully minimize the crowds on the bike course).

If I had to do it again, i would just sit down near the swim start wait for the end of the line to come to me.   This year I wasn't at all worried about getting in line early, but I made the mistake of walking to the end of the line.  wow - I had no idea it would be so long!

I am going to go against the grain here. If I could do it over again I would get to the close to the front as possible. I was in the water at 0727 and had to swim around a lot of people but that is not the main reason. Your main objective should be to get to the bike as soon as possible.  The out and back portion is just plain unsafe for the amount of bikers and speed you get on the downhills.  It seemed very few riders would carry their speed from the downhill to the uphill and would sometimes block the lane three riders wide.  Aside from the tacks this was my only real complaint about the bike portion.  I rarely get pissed during a race but the out and back was VERY irritating.
