I just started riding in April, so I haven't experienced riding in a NC winter. What articles of clothing do y'all reccommend for winter riding?  Also brand names that work or don't work.

By marriage (read: the wife is still in sticker shock over all this cost) I am a cheap guy so of course the less $$ the better.  As far as usage goes, I expect to ride between 70-100 miles per week.

Please know that I am grateful in advance for any advice

This is my standard reply for anyone looking for good bike or triathlon gear for less money:

My winter gear consists of:

* Sugoi tights for the COLD rides. You may get away with just knee warmers if you're burly enough.

* A vest: thermal or wind (I have a castelli rain/wind vest from bonktown to shield wind)

* Arm warmers/sleeves

* sugoi head liner

*some thinner fleece gloves

*while I got away with just socks last year- i'm going to go toe covers this year.

Look for REI scratch and dent sales, or scour ST and BT's classifieds for some good used gear for cheap.

My list:

toe/shoe covers are a must if you have tri shoe or your toes will go numb fast.

wool socks

Headsweats winter beanie

Tights (I just use regular running tights over my bike shorts).

Compression shirts (long and short sleeve) for under jersey

lightweight wind proof gloves.

Arm warmers

running/biking vest

That is really all I use, but I also don't go out when it is below 45.  I mix and match the above to fit the conditions.

I use running tights over bike shorts and that works just fine.  Toe covers are a must...I got mine at REI for a decent price.  Arm warmers are essential for me and my chicken arms, Performance Bike has a good selection.  Wind vest is nice to keep the core warm,  found mine on Bonktown.  Also keep an eye on sites such as The Clymb (http://www..com/home, let me know if you need an invite) they have cycling stuff on there pretty regularly.

The good thing is most of this stuff can be used while running too.

And if you're going to ride when it's stoopid cold put some hot hands under your toe covers and in your gloves!!

Other than that -  what Halfpint said!
