I am getting a Tri Fit done today and have a line on a brand new Cervelo P4 SRAM Red with all the components.  The bike is listed for sale on another forum (ST) and it almost seems to good to be true so I am asking for your opinions.  The seller advised that he was changing sponsors and had to sell the bike.  On Cervelo's website the bike lists for over $6200 and I would be able to get it for $3990 plus shipping or 'other resonable offers'.  The seller is a confirmed paypal account user and this is how the transaction would take place.  I know paypal has buyer's security but I am overly paranoid of being burned because it happened once in the past.  Am I out of line here and being to cautious?  What are your thoughts?

What's his ST account like?  does he have 5 total posts and joined 2 days ago, or is he up there in ST community and a member for years.

I know nothing about being sponsored, but I assume that it comes with some steep discounts.  So if he got the ride from being sponsored its likely that he is still making money on it, even selling it at a cheap price.

Use paypal with your credit card, not yourbank account.  If the deal is a fraud report it as such to the police, and the credit card company will remove the charge.  My bet is that it's a good deal.

On ST you are not allowed to post anything to classifieds until you have reached their guidelines so he has been a member for sometime.  It seems legit but I am wanting to make sure, he also emailed pics of the bike still wrapped in bubble wrap along with the box.

It's a good price, but not to the point where I would say it's a crazy deal. If this is indeed a sponsored athlete selling, and he bought the bike with a 30% discount (which wouldn't be completely out of line...), it would only be $4340, so given the price of $3990, a short use for $400... not really much to argue over.

If the seller has long standing membership and quite a few posts at ST, use PayPal (and credit card!) and you should be reasonably safe (there's not such thing as perfectly safe)

Personally, I'd think that you'd be OK.  If the guys been around awhile and in looking at his posts/interactions with folks on ST it doesn't seem like he's a total d-bag, then he is probably legit.  Like I said, his previous sponsor probably got him the hook up on the ride and he is willing to accept a "cheap" price just to move the bike quickly.  I wouldn't be surprised if the is making a little $ on the bike.

I'd still use all the regular precautions... paypal, credit card, etc. but I'd feel confident that its not stolen or a knock off.

Sponsored racers can get really great discounts.  Back in the day, my road team sponsor was a bike shop and they gave us dealer cost on everything.  When Alpinestars made mountain bikes and sponsored riders, they gave me my bike for more than 50% off retail price.  His price is not out of line at all - in fact he could be making money on the deal. I say go for it if you protect yourself with credit card and if the guy seems legit.
