And this is why I have the Altra Instincts... Zero drop, but not minimal, and the forefoot room is second to none.

Thank you all so VERY much for your thoughts and opinions. This forum really IS the greatest in the spirit of sharing. You make newbies such as myself feel that any question will elicit responses and discussion without derision. I went on a barefoot run today and LOVED it. Only a few miles, but enough to convince me to continue trying it, and to add some less cushioned shoes to my bevy of existing cushioned shoes. Thanks again for your opinions and your patience.

So doc - tell me about your barefoot run.  My feet are starting to toughen up a bit after a half dozen walks of 2-3 miles, but I still don't feel ready to give them a run.  Every now and then I step on a rock or something that maks me say, "oh,hell no!!".  How'd you get past that?

Hey Left Brain! To be honest with you, I really have the perfect setup for my barefoot running. I have a college cross country course (all nice and grassy and well maintained) within 1.5 miles of work. I can trot on over there, rip off my shoes and stash them, run barefooted, then put my shoes back on and trot on back to work. It's so PRIME!!!

I had foot pain about 6 months ago and did some investigating of the VFF.  After a post here which brought lots of good (if conflicting) information, I chose to very very slowly work my way into running in my VFF.  After 6 months, I will say that I really enjoy running in the VFF and I think they may have improved my overall running time, and I'm very sure they have helped my jumping/footwork in basketball.

However, I will say that I don't run far in them, maybe 2-3 miles at most, and if I don't really really stretch before and after, I'm sore for a few days. To give you an example, I ran 11 miles on Sunday in my regular jogging shoes, then ran 2.5 on Wednesday evening in my VFF.  I didn't stretch before or after my short run in the VFF, and my calves are still sore this morning.

So, trust your body but even if you feel great, work into it real slow - and stretch

My local running store just started carrying these.  I intend to buy a pair to try them out soon.

I switched to "barefoot" 2 years ago and haven't looked back.

I spend all my time, walking and running, except for when I'm competing (sprinting in sprinting spikes) in running sandals from www.InvisibleShoe.com
