I'm still downloading the software-- about 4 hours in and almost done. Would it have taken less time if I had upgraded to Lion first?

I guess I'm in the minority and had no issues updating my iPhone and iPad.  I updated my phone around 5:30 this evening and that took a little while (no more than 30 minutes) and my iPad around 9:30 and it took less than 15 minutes.

The only issue I'm having is with my calendars.  They are not syncing as smoothly as I would like them too.  Which is most frustrating as this is the feature I need to work the smoothest.

ETA: Never mind, it was operator error.

I had no issues at all. It took 4 hours to download the software, but once it downloaded, it installed itself reasonably quickly. Now I'm waiting for my iPad software to download.

My favorite update so far is being able to use the volume button to snap pictures when the camera is being held horizontally. And the photo editing capability is handy too.

All updates are working normal for me now. Both iPhones and the iPad. Keep trying and it will eventually work. I would love to see the bandwidth logs for Apple today. It's amazing what we can do with tech now. I am guessing they pushed out petabytes of data today.

iOS updates ~700MB per person (double if they had ipads and iphones). 10.7.2 update, 400-1200 MB plus 400MB update. Now imagine how many updated. Wow.

And Josh, tell me any other company who gets more than 3% of the user base even knowing when a major update is coming, let alone get excited about it ;-).

OS update went flawlessly. Restore went mostly flawlessly except none of my music transferred. So it required a sync to finish. Calendar, mail, angry birds, all the important stuff is just fine.

Updated my iPad last night no problem, took about an hour to download the software.

I was wide awake at 4am so I thought I'd start updating my phone so it could be done when I was ready to leave for work. I started downloading the software and it said it was going to take 12 hours. It was down to 9 hours when I left for work. Guess I'll be updating my phone tonight.

I have a 3GS, I'll be upgrading to the 4S soon.

LockOut - 2011-10-12 10:08 PM
bradword - 2011-10-12 5:38 PMBe careful updating right now and make sure you have a good backup before you update. My wife's phone is stuck in recovery mode because update keeps failing. The Apple authentication server for updates is super overloaded and causing updates to fail. In time it will be fixed and everything, but right now her phone is down (and she's not the only one.)
I don't know if what I am in is considered recovery mode... My phone just keeps restarting, and doesn't ge recognized by my computer... Not a happy camper right now.

So I see what I had to do... managed to fix it early this morning.

If anyone bricks their phone, hold the home and lock buttons for 10 seconds, then let go of the lock (while still holding home), and it'll put you into restore mode. Worked like a charm.

Easy peasy for me. Except for the fact that the comp I normally sync to crashed and burned so I had to find a back door to get everything off my phone so I could update and put it back on. Downloaded SharePod and it worked great.

Update is pretty sweet, I like the new notifications.

Why? It's part of my business to learn these things. The .0 release has been just fine, it's the first day thing that was a problem .

Are people still having issues updating?  I've put it off a few days, but haven't been following too closely.

No, I think it's pretty good now. I updated the next morning, and had absolutely no problem. I imagine the server has been freed up a fair bit since Wednesday afternoon.

I updated my dad's iPhone 4 for him yesterday, took about 1.5 hours to download, epdate went fine, everything works. I also didn't have any trouble updating mine. Would have got my wife's done too but I was out in the garage too late.

In my experience Apple does a pretty good job of working out bugs before they bring something to market, and this update has been in the works for a while, I don't see any reason not to download and run it.

Thanks!  I'll give it a try tonight.  Have to remember to do a backup first.

Another nice feature - iMessage is similar to blackberry's setup.  Free text messages between iOS 5 devices.

It's part of my business to test certain operating systems. Dot zero releases are notorious for being buggy. Almost no major network service provider will deploy a .0 release on its network.

I have a question:
Can someone explain what it means when it asks whether I want the device backed up on the cloud or on my desktop computer?
Is one preferable to the other? What are the pros and cons of each?
I have to admit, I’m a little fuzzy on what the “cloud” means.

Rack of servers in a data center (in this case, belonging to Apple).  It's just the current silly marketing fad terminology.

Just use Messages like you would for texting someone.  When you choose the person to send to, it'll say iMessage in grey in the input area, if they also have iOS 5.  And the message bubbles will be blue instead of green.

If they're green, it means it is a standard text message.

iMessage is way cool for me. I often go to clients homes that have no cell service. They do usually have high speed wireless internet, so now I can still text my wife and some others without service. Awesome! Now if ATT wasn't so overloaded I could activate my new iPhone 4S.
