I have done it a couple of times. Just before my IM, I wanted to see if my Bodyglide would hold up for a 1 hour swim. The next time was when I wanted to see if I could swim 10,000 yards. The pool was only open for 3 hours and I would have been cutting it close trying to swim without it.

I do it once in a while, especially before an IM if I can't get an OW swim in. A lot of it is to get my arms acclimated to the suit (assuming I've got some OW swimming with the suit already). If I haven't been able to get an OW swim in before the IM, I would generally have a pool session with the suit every 2 weeks...

I did it once right after I bought my wetsuit because I didn't have time for an OWS before my next race and I wanted to practice swimming with it on ("nothing new on race day"). Now that I've practiced with it a bit, I only wear it for OWS's. The one pool swim tri I did, I didn't wear my wetsuit.

I wore my wetsuit in the pool a few times before my first tri.  I wanted to get used to wearing it, and it was excellent practice trying to take it off.  I did do an indoor pool sprint tri but didn't wear the wet suit- the pool was 95 degrees.  No kidding- it was awful.  In my swim pictures I look like a boiled lobster- I was completely red!  Just make sure to rinse it really good after wearing it in the pool.

The day after I got my wetsuit I tried it out in the pool just to see if it fit ok. I thought I was going to die after about 500 yards because I was so warm. Blech. I have a race this weekend with a pool swim and will most definitely not be wearing a wetsuit.

I use it when it is cold out, like in April and October (we open our pool early and I swim mostly at night).

I was using it all the time, but it takes so much away from the workout that I stopped using it.

The pool temp that I swam in was 80.1 degrees- so the wetsuit was fine for me to swim in the whole time.  If the pool is warmer, just wear it for your warm up, practice taking it off, and then finish your workout without it.  Do that a few times and you'll be used to and get enough practice taking it off!

I do it anytime my workout is over 1500 yards. It makes the training easier. Plus I like to train the way I race.

Haven't tried it I was worried about the chlorine eating away at it.

I have done several tris with pool swims and I have never seen anyone wear a wetsuit. I'm in Arizona and swim outside year round, the pools are heated.  If it's USAT sanctioned, there are temperature cutoffs for the use of a wetsuit in the swim.  You can easily over heat, but I can see a practice or 2 to get the feel of it.

Uh, no......

I have never seen anyone race a pool swim in a wetsuit.........but I did see a snorkel once in a pool swim. That was surprising!!!

If you can swim in some open water that is the best place to try the wet suit.......if that is not available. Then the pool.......pick a time when no one is there but the lifeguard.

pbarlowtri - 2005-09-22 3:37 PMI do it anytime my workout is over 1500 yards. It makes the training easier. Plus I like to train the way I race.

By doing this you might be limiting your swimming skills a speed. Wetsuits are designed to make your heaps/legs float; hence it makes you swim easier and faster. BUT if you train without a wetsuit and work on your technique, by the time you use one for racing you will be faster for sure…

Amiine,
You are probably right. However, I work out consistenty with two friends who wear speedos or jammers and I have seen a vast improvement in my swim as compared to them. Maybe the improvement would be even greater if I swam in something other than my wetsuit as often. I end up using it about 1/2 the times that I swim.
